I want to buy the new HP 850 digital camera and they're all sold out everywhere around here and there is a two week waiting list (with $100.00 deposit required) for the earliest one.

HP must be doing something right.

Let me give an Opinion as to what i did. About a year and a half ago a good friend of mine said to me after church one Sunday Mrkelso (notmyrealname) it's time to get out of the market and go to high ground
as there is a storm brewing and the valley is no place to be. Well after several hours of debate and disscussion i gave it some thought and moved my monies into safe areas, invested in Rare Gold coins, gold Bullion etc and so forth.
To make a long boring story short i i stayed on high ground and preserved some capital. So i called by friend up and i say rich i am thinking of jumping back in now. He says to me
Don't do it stay in gold ,stay in coins, stay in silver, This is a fools ralley. Now saying all that i ask you,,,,,,,, What the hell is a fools ralley?

PS rich is a financial Analysts for some firm in NY He is a friend for many years and has nothing to do with my investments as i tend to them on my own with my own broker.

  • Folks you're just beating a dead horse. Except for their printer business they're hurting, BAD. There was a report yesterday that had the printer segment of their business valued at about $16 if I remember right, that meant the rest of their business was only worth $2/share.

Dump the dogs (HP & Carly) and buy Dell if you want to make money with a computer related stock. Dell will have their own printers out within the next few months and will begin eating HP's dinner, they've already eaten their lunch. Virtually all of HP's profits come from their printers and sales of ink cartridges.

Today's charity bump in HPs stock is very surprising and will haunt new investors as they watch HP's stock price hover around their entry point for years to come. HP's profits this quarter have come as a result of firing so many people because of their merger with Compaq. Give Dell a year in the printer business and HP will start announcing early that they won't be able to meet their numbers again.

"That Compaq merger will haunt HP for years to come. Your CEO is a moron. Sorry." Gmarguli

Greg, I find myself agreeing with you quite a bit lately.

For the record, I've owned HP in the past and broke even on it when it was around $32. I've owned Dell for the past four+ years and I see no reason to own any other computer stock. Once the cycle picks up, Dell will be a $100 within a year, again. My money is where my mouth is. Touting HP stock is to investing as CoinGuy hawking coins on the Home Shopping Network is to coin investing. I guess Newbies always need to learn their lesson first.

Now Greg, my father is an exec with Compaq and also had so harsh words about HP..............that was 6 months ago.

Both companies have merged and are now hitting Wall Street targets. BTW, Wall Street is talking about the new 800-pound gorilla about to take on big blue. Dell is also making moves to combat the new HP. Coins and bullion are what I have been doing for the past 2 years, before it was 8 years as a Compaq reseller.

Many people told me that during the internet stock crazy. If you're trading it, then fine. If you're investing in it, then you need to be worried. eBay needs to make money and a lot of it to support the stock price. Monopoly or not, they can't keep raising the fees. People won't pay it.

    Their stock will drop.

For what it is worth, it is at the point where I will be shorting it.

Bryan, I hope your father doesn't have his retirement pinned on HPQ. If he does, then he might be moving in with you. image I hate to say this, but most opinions are that Compaq came to HP with little to offer. CPQ was a dead company. It was getting it's assed kicked.

The company is hitting what targets? A loss target. Did I read it right where they lost $2 Billion this QUARTER? I don't follow the company that much anymore. At one point I owned some of it, but dumped it after the split and Agilant spin off. Actually made some money on that dog.

The stock is trading where it did 7 years ago.

HPQ isn't an 800-pound gorilla, it is an 800-pound snail that is about to get stepped on.

Why aren't you a Compaq reseller anymore? Because Dell took all their business?

Packard and Hewlett would roll over in theri graves if they knew how HP was presently run.

I still cannot figure out out HP bought out Compaq. Please explain this to me????????

Yep, I have HP and Dell computers. HP computers are better built than Dell computers but damn, Dell's customer service and response is so superior it doesn't even matter!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dell over HP in a heartbeat!!

But I have liked bank stocks for the last 6 years. Reminds me of coins. I lost nothing on stocks in the lkast two years.

Geez, there sure are a lot of people spouting opinions on how various stocks will perform.

Maybe this is like politics and religion, and is best not discussed here image

By the way, HP did not lose money this last quarter:
HP said on Wednesday that it earned $390 million, or 13 cents a share, compared with a loss of $505 million, or 17 cents a share a year earlier for the combined company. Revenue was $18.1 billion, down from $18.2 billion a year ago.

I don't know if HP will turn out to be the 800 lb gorilla, or will be an anemic 800 lb manatee, but I'm glad I work in the printing and imaging business within HP.

By the way, HP did not lose money this last quarter:

Perhaps it was the quarter before? I believe I got the number off Yahoo.
  • HP DID lose money in the recently reported fourth quarter on certain segments of their business, mainly computers. Like noted earlier, HP has a great printer business. However, that business is getting ready to come under fire and HP and its investors are going to have a difficult time ahead. If it weren't for the printers HP would have posted a loss.

The following documents HP's recent quarterly reports as taken from the recent news on Dell Computer from Excite.com:

HP posted an operating loss of $87 million in the fourth quarter in its personal systems business, which includes PCs and laptop computers, a narrower loss than some analyst estimates of $100 million. Revenue in the segment fell 6.1 percent to $5.05 billion from $5.4 billion.

In its enterprise systems division, HP posted an operating loss of $152 million, also less than some analysts had expected. Revenue fell 5 percent to $4.07 billion.

For the full article here's the address, I don't know how to link it up so just copy it and paste into your brower address area if you're interested:

I suppose it shouldn't matter that I am posting stock related material on a coin site's thread but if people are reading this far they must be interested in the thread, right?

I think there are enough synergies yet to be realized in the merger to at least bring them to break-even in all catagories, including PC's and laptops. Think of the money they'll save in manufacturing and buying parts in larger quantity. However, PC prices certainly aren't going up, and I wouldn't hold any computer manufacturer right now. I do hold eBay and it went up over $70 today. I've made a killing on it so far. Also Starbucks..it's been stagnating for a while but long term I think Starbucks is a great company to hold...dump your HP and buy *$ stock!

This is what happens when you combine two crappy companies:

COMPAQ + HP = LARGE CRAP PILE

    Just my opinion,
    Dave

P.S. I must admit I love HP printers....

The top feeding printers suck. The paper bends from that position and you end up having to feed each piece of paper one at a time. This has happened to several of their printers.

    << <i>COMPAQ + HP = LARGE CRAP PILE >>

As it is, yes. All they need to do is lose their current leadership, IMHO. The merger itself was a good idea though. Whether they'll make good use of it or whether they let the combined company fall apart (geez why does that sound like...oh I dunno AOL-TimeWarner?) remains to be seen.

went to compUSA other day and they had HP 3320 color injets for 50 bucks, I bought two image only tech I'd touch right now is defense related, but GL anyways. EOM
  • The only way HP will ever make money on the Compuke/HP merger is if they can find anyone gullible enough to take it off their hands. With Dell putting the squeeze on their printers it is going to diminish HP's profits for the foreseeable future when HP has to give away their printers like they are giving away their computers now. Dell has a significant pricing advantage when we are talking about computer manufacturing, no one has been able to copy it. Dell can sell a computer for $1,000 and make money doing it, HP loses $$$.

Question for all: Why did HP's #2 Michael Capellas (and Compuke's CEO pre-merger) go to WorldCom, a company that may not make it back out of bankrupcy? He had to see a decent quarter coming and he still left Carly.

Only option I've heard that makes sense is for HP to become a software company by buying EDS. I don't see them being able to take on Dell AND IBM successfully.
