I Need Tips on Building a 1960 Topps PSA Baseball Set

My sister's boyfriend recently told me he wants to start collecting the 1960 set in raw cards. I have always liked this set and thought I'd start a graded set. I've gotten two cards in PSA 8 so far but don't really know a whole lot about this set (other than what I currently have available - Beckett Magazines, PSA Pop Report & SMR, and Set Registry). I'd like to go for PSA 8 and 9 cards. I have some raw cards and haven't checked them out yet to see if they are worthy of PSA grading or not. I haven't followed ebay auctions for these cards and would appreciate any input about what to expect as far as what to pay, cards that are hard to find, etc. Thanks in advance for any help.

    JEB:

I have a few very nice 1960 Topps Philadelphia Phillies player PSA 9 MINT baseball cards that I am willing to sell. At least one of them is 1/1. I would expect a premium for these cards -- but if you are interested, I can send you scans, and it would be a great way to set you up on building a very nice set!!

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

For high pop cards, you should be able to pick the cards up at or below SMR if you're patient. The low pop cards will most likely end up with bidding wars driving the prices up. The key is to understand which cards are truly rare and which ones just haven't been submitted as often. I would recommend looking at the completed ebay auctions and emailing the top 5 on the set registry with your question.

  • The average pop in 8 for a common is about 15. There are a couple of with a population of one, and it looks like there are a lot that are pretty low pop.

If you can get nice ones raw and send them in, that would be the way to do this, I think, but you will feel stupid if you send a hundred in and get a few 8's, and a bunch of 6's and 7's, so take it easy and make sure you know what you are doing.

If you try to do this by getting graded cards on eBay, I bet your sister has a couple of kids by the time you are done.
