  • Around the National, there were somewhere between 3 and 6 of these graded PSA 9. According to the pop report, there are now 68. One was sold on eBay in the last 30 days and it sold for $228 ... which is about 1/2 of what it was a few months ago.

I'm not sure where all of the others are. Does dsl have a pile of them???

PSA population report printout on 1975 Topps from July 28, 2002:
    #640 Harmon Killebrew
    PSA 7: 39
    PSA 8: 41
    PSA 9: 3
    PSA 10: 0
Total in all grades including qualifiers: 93
PSA population report printout on 1975 Topps from October 17, 2002:
    PSA 7: 42
    PSA 8: 46
    PSA 9: 5
    PSA 10: 0
    Total: 104
Current population as of November 20, 2002:
    PSA 7: 43
    PSA 8: 59
    PSA 9: 68
    PSA 10: 0
    Total: 182
That is amazing increase on this card population in 34 days! Out of 78 Killebrew cards sent to PSA between Oct. 17 and Nov. 20, 63 cards got awarded PSA 9 and 12 cards got PSA 8. There is no other 1975 Topps card with that large increase of population since summer, let alone 63 net increase in PSA 9 on single card! I wonder if this is simple data entry error where PSA 9 total is supposed to be changed from 6 to 8, but instead leaving both numbers making it total of 68 in PSA 9 and total in all grades increased to 182 as result of this error?

I doubt the system is updated in that fashino - not a computer expert by any means, but I'd figure the pop is updated based on cards being added to PSA's database - it would be illogical to have a seperate database that wasn't linked to actual serial #s...
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?
  • That's not the only card to increase in population dramatically. The #2 Lou Brock Highlight card jumped from a population of one in PSA 9 to a population of nine. Furthermore, #580 Frank Robinson which had a population of three jumped to 20! Frank
Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10.

PSA68> Your info on Brett is incorrect - your numbers are from the "9Q" column. As of right now, there are 74 Brett PSA9s with no qualifiers out of 2428 total submissions. That works out to about 3%.

Even if if there were only 20 Brett 9s, it wouldn't be as tough as a PSA9 Nolan Ryan.
    Twenty Bretts - 20 of 2428 = 0.8%
    Three Ryans - 3 of 822 = 0.3%

Statistically and subjectively, the Ryan is the toughest of the HOFers to find in 9 in this set. It's an easy card to find in 8, but there's always just enough wrong with it to keep it from a 9. Where the eye appeal on some 75s just goes "POW", the Ryan almost always looks dull and lifeless.

As for the influx of Killebrew PSA9s. . .even if a dealer did have 65 PSA9-quality Killebrews, I have a hard time imagining he'd submit them all at once and totally blow apart the pop for that card. But I guess anything is possible. Here's to finding one at the Sun-Times show this weekend. Given the explosion in pop, they should be pretty inexpensive now image

mcastaldi: I appreciate your corrections and comments. Yes, I looked at wrong column on George Brett PSA 9 totals as you said. I agree with you that Nolan Ryan is toughest 1975 Topps HOF card in PSA 9 grade. For some reason I missed that one. Obviously it was not good idea to do population report analysis at 4 am!
