Can eye appeal be graded?
![ANACONDA](https://forums.collectors.com/applications/dashboard/design/images/banned.png)
This question was brought up in another thread but I think it deserves it's own thread, although, I suspect that it will be a short one.
The answer to 'Can eye appeal be graded?' is.....
...of course it can. Take women for example. Martha Stewart is a 5.5. Christie Brinkley in her prime was a 9.99. Bo Derrick in her prime was a 9.75. Hillary Clinton in her prime was a 5.7. Her daugter is a 5.5.
You may not agree with my grades but you are not going to give Hillary a 7 while giving Christie a 6.

P.S. If you are sensitive to the use of the word "women" in the third paragraph, and the subsequent reference to specific females, then think about it in terms of men using the photographs below as thought provokers: (I've posted many pictures of woman in my offerings, occasionally a change of pace is arguably warranted.)

....finally.....if you keep coming into my postings and thinking, "Man, I hate this guy....." then why do you keep coming back for more misery???? Why not just get a short stick with some leather straps, tie some nails and razors to it and lash yourself instead????

I disagree that eye appeal can be graded - accurately. The problem is that the controversy doesn't arise when it's Christie Brinkley vs. Phyllis Diller. Since all the commotion tends to surround high-end coins, it's more like Meg Ryan vs. Maria Grazia Cucinotta. Both are beautiful. Some prefer the Italian type, some the blonde All-American type. Some like toning, some do not.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
You can grade eye appeal and the grades can then be compared. As long as the grades are accurate in relation to each other, then all is well.

There was a recent post that linked to a Walker with a reverse covered with numerous brown splotches. To me it looked horrible. However, some people found it attractive. I don't think averaging will solve that problem. I would give it a 1 for eye appeal, someone else sees it as an 8. It doesn't mean the coin is a 4.5 (the average of the two), because I don't think anyone would have given it a 4.5. You'd either love it or hate it, and no one in either camp would feel the 4.5 was correct.

Sure it is.
(Is my response too subtle?)
Even good six doesn't last as long as a bad coin.

Eye appeal is important but sometimes is taken too much into consideration, especially by the 3rd party graders trying to "market grade". Too often it trumps technical merits. There are alot of weakly struck, doctored coins with arm-length eye appeal that are over graded as a result. The final arbiter on grading is the bidder/buyer - the open market is where eye appeal and quality are most accurately judged.

PS Eye appeal can be graded but it will take some different level of thinking to come up with a one size fits all catagory.
CLASSICS - excellent comment. I LOL!
