1867 pcgs proof65 half wildly toned
and undergraded
this coin is a stone 66 with no hairlines or marks underneath the toning
monster deep mirrors highlight the medium bullseye toning when viewed in person! this coin needs to be sight seen.
the obverse at 3 pm probably had a cloth resting on it but absolutely no hairlines nor marks, nicks on this coin meaning it was not wiped! a totally original unmessed with coin!
the current market doesnot favor medium toned coins! hence 65! which is okie by me as this coin would cost lots more if in a holder that has a 66 on it!! for me the reverse is a solid 67!
the exact colors and target toning of this coin are seen on some other proof seated silver quarters and halves of this era!
usually proof seated halves from the 1860's are either so deeply toned blue black that you can hardly see the mirrors unless they are tilted in a bright entensive light or are overdipped an ugly white hazy cloudy with sometimes a light ugly golden/yellow/russet secondary toning around the rims to the centers
since REAL gem 1867 mintstate seated halves are virtually non existant this puts considerable date pressure on the proofs from collectors!
this coin was the highlight of an auction a few years agofrom a collection of a gentleman an academic from the midwest that bought this and other coins from legendary coin sellers of the 1940's to the early 1960's!
