Ebay buyer or seller responsibility?

Quite frequently, as a winning bidder, I have to contact the seller to get information. Lately it seems that 9 times out of 10, the seller never contacts me. All I get are the notices from ebay. Sometimes, even after requesting info, it takes a long time for a response. I realize that some dealers sell a lot of stuff, but in my opininion, it should always be the sellers responsibility to contact the winning bidders. I always contact the buyer when an auction I listed has ended. Any thoughts on this.

  • I admit, I rarely email buyers after the close - but payment usually comes one way or the other - how you might ask?

Well, I leave my mailing address in the auction, I think I have it on my ME page, I take Paypal, and paypal is more than willing to post links on my completed auctions to help them get a small chunk, I have mailing address on ebay check-out as well.

After a couple weeks I will contact a buyer, to check on their payment method, if I still have the item in my hand.
  • Pretty dumb not contacting the buyer.
If I am high bidder, I contact the seller right away. Really ticks me off when time goes by and the jerks don't answer. Couple of times I was just gonna let the item go and Neg the seller.
Ebay rules says the buyer and seller are to contact each other within three days.
sinin 1, do you Neg the buyer if he doesn't pay for an auction and turn him in as a nonpaying bidder? Is it his responsibility to hunt you down? Geesh!!

I have paypal send off a confirmation email once the auctions end. Saves me loads of time, unless the situation arises like this past weekend. The confirmation emails were sent out today from Paypal for Sunday's auctions. image
If I'm a buyer, and the item has a Paypal "pay now" button. I just pay for the item through paypal, and wait for it to be delivered. Otherwise, I wait for the seller to contact me.

  • When I win an auction, I don't mind not being contacted by the seller provided all the information (shipping charges and where to send payment) is in the listing. If I have to guess, then I expect them to email within a couple days.

I completely agree. But, if the seller has all the info necessary in the listing for me to pay, I just do that right away. I do find it somewhat discourteous that many sellers now seem to think that with all the automation software they no longer need to have any contact with their customer, though.

One of the reasons I like doing business with David Sager (besides the fact that he knows how picky I am, so there's no surprises) is that even though he does volume, and uses the software technology, he always personally acknowledges the sale in some way.

Using the eBay checkout feature has worked good for me in both buying and selling.

buyer and seller, exactly. they both have the responsibility to make sure contact is made.

whoever wants the deal done the most, i would guess, is the one who's going to make the first contact.

I agree the seller should do the contacting but I have also noticed the trend of not hearing from the seller. I think it started when eBay began allowing sellers to enter payment information at the time of listing. This info is reprinted in the auction and on the eBay notice. I think many sellers feel this relieves them of further contact information. Add to the the automatic e-mails many allow PayPal to send and they think they've done their job. Frankly, as a buyer I usually find this to be adequate (although I think it is sloppy business). However, when I buy two items and need a combined shipping quote or some other custom service this is particularly not adequate.

  • I like to make personal contact as a seller shortly after the auction ends. I think it is plain courtesy. Of course, for those who do mega-amounts of listings, the automated stuff may be easier, but certainly the seller should contact the buyer!
  • I think it's the seller's responsibility to give the buyer instructions on payment after the auction has ended. This can be done in a number of ways. The seller can give this information in the item's description or the payment instructions section (which gets included in the email from ebay.) Automatic emails from PAYPAL is what I use. If I get somebody who has won more than one item from me, I usually send out a separate email with totals for shipping, etc.

  • Ebay has it set up now where you can click to send an invoice. It is really convient. The only thing they need to change is when the invoice comes... it needs to have the sellers email address as 'from'... not ebays....
  • The first thing I do is contact the seller.I believe the winning bidder should contact the seller right away. I like to get payments out the day after the auction closes.I find that most buyer do contact the sellers within 2 days. It's a good policy to do this.If you're looking for pos. feedback this is the route to take.

  • with volume sellers or for anyone that uses auction software, it is just a matter of a few mouse clicks to send automated emails to the winning bidders. i can't imagine why any seller would be lax in doing something so simple. it, literally, take less than a minute to send one or hundreds of emails.

I put all the information in the payment instructions in the auction. This info is also e-mailed automatically at the end of the auction.

90% of the buyers follow these instructions and I know within a day or two if they have paid via EFT or are mailing payment.

For the 10% that don't follow the instructions I send eBay's invoice the 2nd day after close of auction.

So far, no problems (111 transactions and counting).

    Joe.
  • I don't care if I get a personal email or an automatic from the seller (I only buy on eBay) but it really must have the mailing address in the notice. I handle all of my e-mail while I am offline during times when I can't get back on and tie up the line.

Notifications that don't have addresses, require me to go through checkout, to go back to the auction to find out how much to add for shipping etc get shunted aside for processing later and I may not get back to them for some time because they quickly get buried. (I don't use paypal either so I need a mailing address.)

Notices with the proper info get paid immediately, notices without may not get cleaned up for two to three weeks unless they have a clear easy to find email link to the seller. If they have the link I'll send them a email asking for the info. many times the answer I get back refers me back to the auction and/or checkout which puts it back at the bottom of the pile again. (I only get a chance to actively work ebay about every two or three weeks. I do my searches and keep a list of auctions I want to pop in and snipe, then I only go back to Ebay at those times, make my snipe and leave again.)

I use the ChannelAdvisor Auction Management Software for all my sales. At midnight (which is the time I selected), they combine all the auctions from one bidder, figure combined shipping, and send out invoices to everyone that won an auction in the previous 24 hours. If I have a "Buy it Now" during the day while I'm at my computer, I just have the invoice go out then. As for the "personal" touch, I always respond to my emails upon receipt. Even with the aforementioned software, I still get a number of emails every week asking for pyment information. This usually happens when people have registered one email address with eBay, but have changed ISPs and now have another email address.
