Question on PCGS Population reports

David,

Thanks for taking time to answer our questions.

Mine is - Does PCGS have any plans to do something to increase the accuracy
of the Population Reports? As we all know, many coins are cracked out for
resubmission, with the old inserts never being turned in. This, if course, leads
to inflated population numbers, particularly for the "less than top pop" coins.
This problem only gets worse as time goes on.

Also, does PCGS track population data separately for the various holders styles
that have been used over the years?

The accuracy (or lack of it) caused by repeated crack-outs of certain coins is a continuing problem. We have started to track the number of inserts that big submitters of "vintage" coins return to us. The theory is that a big submitter who never turns in inserts from crack-outs is probably just tossing the inserts. We'll contact these guys and try to explain to them how turning in inserts is to everybody's advantage, including theirs. There are also ways of tracing a coin's submission history (on the really rare coins) and contacting multiple coin submitters of the same coin to get the true story. It's a big job, but we're ready to chase down some of the Pop Report's obvious inaccuracies.

We do not keep track of Pops by holder tyype.
