Know what "exergue" means??

Read a good article in the latest coin world re: the components of a coin...one of which was the exergue, a protected area often reserved for the date or mint mark - protected by the devices and the rim....never knew that...amazing what you see by looking/reading.

    The 1913 Buffalo nickel was altered in its first year to add an exergue surrounding "FIVE CENTS" on the reverse, giving us the Type 1 and Type 2. The denomination was wearing off too quickly, and I guess there were lingering memories of the racketeer nickel fiasco. Unfortunately, Charles Barber was unable to restrain his tinkering to the simple elimination of the "mound."image
