Desperate for help ASAP

I have what was a beautiful Early Dollar (PCGS AU50) that suddenly started turn color inside the holder. The plastic ring that holds the coin in place has a weird yellowish tinge to it, and the coin actually has developed some staining by the periphery.

NGC DNC'ed this coin saying that it has staining.

What shall I do? I really do NOT want to lose this coin. It is simply beautiful. Should I crack it out NOW and submit it to NCS?

If the coin is ruined, I also don't want to lose the warranty. (Mark Feld, you saw this coin at the show.)

PS The yellowish color on the ring was there when I submitted it at the show, but there was no staining then.

Any possibility of calling PCGS on the carpet on this? Since it is in their holder, maybe they can/will do something. I would be a little hesitant on cracking it out of the slab it is in now. I would think that by leaving it in it's current slab, the "professionals" can see that it is the slab that is causing the problem. Just my 2 cents worth...

EVP - I'd recommend you contact PCGS (heck, why not homerun Hall himself!).

NCS stands for Numismatic Conservation Services. They chemically treat coins to "conserve" them. Kind of like professional art restoration for coins. They share quarters in Sarasota with NGC, so once they are done with their magic, they can walk accross the hall and give them to NGC for slabbing. They have recently started slabbing problem coins, with "no grade" given. I have used them on some really skanky coins and have been very pleased with the results.

Bad break, sounds like a decent coin. I am sure you would rather have the coin fixed than replacement $.

I agree that it is bad too, but wouldn't you want the $ instead of a coin getting cracked out of the PCGS holder. What if NCS can't do anything?

EVP- I would send it to PCGS first to see if they make good on their guarantee. Then you can send it to NCS in the slab for conservation. NCS will not remove the coin from the PCGS slab unless they think they can help the coin. Use the grade guarantee for 1-1/2 % of stated value and they should put the coin in a NGC holder at the same grade. Good Luck!

Bottom line, guys, is that I want the coin more than I want the money. The coin has been in this holder since early 1999, and in 2 weeks it's undergone noticable change.

I called Mark Feld, and he calmed me down (yes, I was panicking!) and convinced me to contact PCGS. I left Charlie a message as well as a pointer to this thread. I am hoping that since the development is so recent, PCGS can have a good chance of stabilizing the coin.

BTW -- Charlie just called me. Gotta go!

I thought you can send the coin to NCS in the PCGS holder. You get charged an fee for them to look at it, if they cant do anything they return it. If they can they crack it out, fix it. If they cant fix it, thats why you purchase grade guarentee. Id contact PCGS tho 1st.

After speaking w/ Charlie, I sent the coin to him via FedEx overnight. It's expensive insuring the coin!!!

Please wish me luck (in getting the coin conserved properly!).

Grade guarentee applies only to "approved" grading services. Which means that it would have to be sent to NGC.

grade guarantee is ok for pcgs coins. if the coin goes to ncs in a pcgs holder, is conserved, and comes back in a lower grade in the ngc slab, the company will pay for the fair market value difference between the grades. they have done this for me.

Hey Russ Thats not compleatly true,When I was in Fla dropping my coins off I put grade guarenties on a couple PCGS and ANACS crosses.

Note I said the coin must be "sent" to NGC. In other words, you can only avail yourself of the service if you agree to have the coin slabbed by NGC, and no other service. That makes the guarantee of no value to those who don't want their coins in NGC holders.

I can't help thinking the coin was fine for two years but in two weeks. Could the change result from
improper storage? How long have you own this coin? Are slabs gauranteed to be sealed?

Whats the ring turning yellow for anyway? Is this a fate in all our futures. I've always been a bit worried about that soft plastic ring they use.

I've owned this coin since Jan. 1999. For the majority of that time, including to the present, I've kept the coin in an Intercept Shield holder. I'd say that the storage was proper -- at least as far as I can tell.

AJ: your fear seems warranted. However, I shoud note that there doesn't seem to have been a rash of these rings changing color...

FedEx will insure coins and raw stones. UPS is the service that will not insure coins, raw stones, etc...

FedEx does not insure. I had to buy insurance, at $1 per $100 of value. I wanted to expedite the process of getting the coin to PCGS. The coin seemed to be fighting a clock!

FedEx will insure coins. When using overnight, they cover the 1st $50(i know, big deal) You can buy optional insurance through FedEX, just like at the USPS, only FedEx costs more. UPS will not insure shipment of lots of valuables, such as the ones i listed above.
