Anybody ever seen a PROOF 53? (FIFTY THREE?)

It's still a nice looking coin, but it must have been abused by it's owner before it got slabbed.

Even though it's a POP 1 coin there is 1 lower - a PR50

    I saw a 1895 Morgan in PR10 somewhere recently (can't remember where).

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

These coins are called "impaired proofs".
  • There's a PF-6 Gobrecht dollar out there.

And that Gobrecht was very visually appealing, strangely enough. More so than some of the uncirculated examples I've seen in photographs.
  • I have quite a few pr-50 somethings morgans
  • That half eagle appears harshly cleaned, to me. It doesn't look like circulation wear. . . .

  • I found a 1987 proof half dollar out of a slot machine the other day. Needless to say the time spent in the casino didn't do much for the coin.

I have several Morgan proofs between 50 and 58. Several of them are due to excessive wiping/cleaning which was an acceptable practice years ago for these types of coins. Others with true wear make me think about the kids that could swipe "a whole dollar" and go down the the general store. (I've seen kids swipe coins from collections and buy candy at stores). I also think of those hard times in our country when that collector piece had to be used for food and clothing.

It's yet another facet of our history and our continuous pondering of "wonder who has held this coin?"

Many years ago I found a common proof Jefferson. Because it was worn, I just spent it again.
