FLYING EAGLE -- NO DATE -- COMMENTS???

I got this coin from an old time collector who was struck by the look of the coin with no date. There is detail on the reverse in the same area, which further raises questions. There is no trace of a date on this coin.

this is based on the scan only and i would need to see the coin in person to say for sure but it looks like a super skillful date removal job!

Now that's what I call a misplaced date! Nice conversation piece. Think I can make out faint vertical patterns in the area of the date, perhaps leftover from whatever tool was used to scrape it off. And the reverse was probably ground down from the pressure of the tool work. After some nice wear as a pocket piece almost all traces have worn away nicely.

Since it has the high leaves/closed E style reverse it's probably an 1857, but could be an 1858 Large Letters with a Type 1 reverse.

it would be ashame if it were a 56 or a 8 over 7 but by the looks of the AM in Ameraca I think Paul is right a 58 LL type1

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
