anyone ever think about working at a bank?

Although I will probably never do it, I have thought about getting a part-time job at a bank as a teller just to be able to look through all the coins and older currency that comes in. How wierd is this?

  • pretty weird!

    not really.

The majority of work I do is FOR banks, and I try to keep the tellers on the lookout for me, but have never garnered anything - they just forget.

On the other hand, my step daughter works at a bank, and she is relentless in trying to dig up anything out of the ordinary. She has brought home several vintage $100 and $50 notes - lots of Silver Certificates and any silver coins she ever comes across. She calls me as soon as she gets a chance to tell me she has something new for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation when she first started out "I got this hundred dollar bill that looks strange, like you said, but it's old - it says 1934 - do you still want it?"

    Hell Yes!

I always wanted to work at a bank when I was a kid. I thought about counting all that money everyday. I still wish I would have done that for awhile, maybe as a college intern or something.

I think the good stuff would be pretty scarce, even if you are working for a bank. I suspect the best finds available would be currency with odd serial numbers. They sell for good money, and if you are handling new currency on a regular basis you have a decent shot of finding something.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Geoman, you must be pretty wierd because I've had the same thought. I wonder how many rolls of Ohio-P quarters never made it into circulation because bank employees got to them first. Additionally, when I see groups of 100 star notes on eBay, I'm convinced that the seller is a bank employee. I also seem to recall reading that the head of the largest currency collectors group in the UK is a bank teller.

  • You have a death wish don't you? Don't do it man, I did banking for 24 years and its a workplace from hell. If your wanting to do coins try working as the change collector at a carnival or game room. I worked summers years ago at a Bingo joint, and man when them women want to play, nothing is precious!! I used to get halves, dollars, mercs you name it. I could hear silver dropping from two tables away. One woman came in and cashed in 20 rolls of merc's just to play. Got tired of them laying around she said. We bought them all up at face from the prop. I had a regular who collected of all things the bills with the star in the serial number. She said they were rare. I'd save them up for her, and she'd pay me in walkers for them. Those were the days.....

Well, you'd have to get it all cleared up with the bank manager first. I'm sure auditing would be very close behind you. Just an unfortunate side of life. I would like to be in that position, to see the new coins, but it would open wide the door for accusations.
  • I worked as night manager of the Student Union during college in the late sixties. Had to count all of the money after closing. I nearly went crazy trying to buy all of the 90% silver coins for melt. So many coins and so little available cash. image
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
  • Casinos are more strict than banks believe it or not.

I heard a story once about a guy who was playing poker at a casino and saw a nice $100 radar note in the dealers till. The dealer wouldnt give it to him, citing it was against the rules. He had to call over the floor manager and then beg him for it. The floor manager said they cant do it, but he begged enough and they gave it to him.

I saw it.. it was a nice note. circulated but a nice find.
