fake pennies from mint sets - what do you do?

Everybody that has uncirculated sets has them - those copper covered zinc tokens that say for example "uncirculated denver aound a big D" and on the other side "treasury united states mint surronding some emblem"

When you start taking coins out what do you do with these?

If I spend them at McDonalds will I get thrown in jail? What would I call them if I sold them on ebay - "misstruck pennies?"

I am curious what board members do with these - give them away at Halloween? or trash can?

I hate to say it (for fear of threats from Lincoln fanatics), but I think they look cooler than the Lincoln dude who has been around toooo long.

Well, I haven't played with my mint sets so my medals are all still there. That's all they are, just medals. I have seen coin shops sell them for $0.25 each. They're not legal tender, but someone would probably take them without realizing it. One time I accidentally (truthfully) handed someone a Dominican Republic 25 centavo piece as a quarter. It was made exactly to the specification of a US Quarter but with a different design. Got mixed up in my change.

I give them to my kids to play with. They love them. Also the big blue disks out of the Ike blue packs.

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Yah, I had the same problem with those darn C & C sets that came with the fake nickel. Anyone could tell it was a fake, it was too big to be a real nickel. So I just took out the cool stamp and tossed the rest in the trash. Too much hassle to list it on eBay.image
A 1943 copper Lincoln will still only buy a gumball out of the machine, but you can purchase the machine and the store with that same cent.
