My latest half eagle!

I bought this one on eBay Friday, and I just got it today (super fast huh?). You can try to grade it if you want, but is really has little formal numismatic value as it is a love token. Normally I don't buy love tokens, but this one caught my eye, one it's gold (I like gold), two it's engraved "Hiawatha" which although likely coincidental is also the name of a passenger train run by the Milwaukee Road (I love trains), and finally it's engraved Dec. 12, '08, which is my birthday, though 61 years before I was born! It's amazing to me how something made for a completely different person almost a century ago could have that much meaning to me today! Here are some pics: 1901 Obverse 1901 Reverse

    hey jeff

what's it weigh now?? the local dealer recently bought a collection that included some repaired $3 gold that used to cuff-links. bummer!! some people collect love tokens but i'd rather collect the coins. i'm funny that way. it is kinda neat having your birthday on it. spooky!!!!image

  • I have no way to weigh it, but it's pretty heavy, my guess is that it still has at least 1/5 of an ounce of gold in it. This would have been a pretty expensive proposition in 1908, and my guess is that the jeweler shaved it pretty close as not to lose much gold. And I agree with you, I prefer coins myself, but this was a neat one I just couldn't pass up (besides, I only paid about $20 over melt!).
