Couple of Lincoln Finds

I found these two in my change, the 73-D I got on Saturday, and the 60 I got at the gas station this evening (I compared it to my album, and I think it's a LD, but I am terrible in telling the 1960s apart). Not bad for face value, and it's nice to see them out there, too bad I already have two nicer specimens in my album! Obverse Reverse

What city or state did you get them?

I took about 10 mixed up unc rolls to the bank about three weeks ago. I has stuff from 1959 through 1974-S coins that I took in. I'm in southeastern Wisconsin. I wonder???

  • The 73-D I got south of Tacoma, WA and the 60 was in Issaquah, WA.

Your 1960 is a large date. Both coins look like they were relatively recently put into circulation, but I know of a lot of people who buy UNC rolls, search through them for goodies, then circulate the rest. I personally don't do this, but I do know of others who do.

The 1960 small and large date cents are actually the easiest ones to tell apart, probably tied with the 1982 large and small dates. The harder ones to tell apart are the 1970S large and small date and the 1974 large and small date.

Something interesting to note on the reverse of your 1973 cent....look at the designer's initials (to the right of the base of the memorial). These are the largest they get. 1973 had a one-year reverse design: all 1972 cents had small initials, all 1974 cents had smaller initials than the 1973, but larger than 1972. Just an interesting side note.

There are all sorts of hidden little things to discover...now...the trick is to find a 1973 cent with the reverse of 1972, or a 1974 cent with the reverse of 1973. I have been looking for 20 years and haven't found one, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't exist.
