1950 bowman

Starting a 1950 Bowman (PSA 5 or better). Read Brucemo's write up. Does anyone have any more insight? i.e. ebay trends, above or below SMR...etc. It seems a bit tough in the early going as I only want to pay via Paypal. Quite a few sellers don't accept paypal. The centering doesn't seem to be too bad on most graded ones, even a 5. Any additional insight will be helpful.

Thanks.
Fred

  • Glad to hear you're starting this set. I've been collecting it for over 5 years now and love them. My favorite set by far. Even got close to finishing a PSA 8 50B football set.

I have the entire set raw in VG/EX to EX condition. Started a 7 set a long time ago and decided against it. The chase is usually more exciting than actually owning it.

I mainly go after PSA 5s if I see them now- and only if they're well-centered. I have a few PSA 8s (including a Spahn) that I'm selling off this week on ebay. The market is pretty weak nowadays. You can usually get any grade under SMR. Usually between 70-80% of it. Even PSA 8s are going much lower on ebay. The toughest ones seem to be #1 and #252 (above 7 condition). Williams is pretty easy to find. I've had a 5,6,7, and 8 in the past. My 8 is currently under review by PSA. Berra is typically the only one besides maybe Williams that always goes above SMR (in any condition). Other than that, most will be under SMR - unless one of the big boys needs it (ie. #99 goodman went this past weekend to Bruce, one of the few he still needs).

A 7 set is tough to do, but if you have the money, go for it. Personally, I think an ungraded set is much easier to obtain and easier to display in Ultra Pro sheets (they have ones where 12 will fit to a page and they're 'sized' correctly.

Bruce did an awesome job with the descriptions on his webiste, eh?

Good luck and if you think you want to start a 6 or 7 set, let me know or check out my registry (under A&J collection #8) if you want them before I post to ebay next week.

    Take care,
    Andy

  • ngfred,

i swear you are my nemesis; i've recently gotten into 1950 bowman as well and don't need the competition. : ) in any event, i doubt we'll provide much competition for each other---i'm pursuing the set in vg-ish raw condition (i just got a psa 2 jackie robinson, which, to me, is the most beautiful thing in the world), so i doubt our interests will overlap. but if i do see a really nice 5, i may be game.

seriously, it's a great set and they're aren't too many "high dollar" cards, so it's totally possible to complete. plus, i could never in good conscience go after the 1951 set becaue so many images from it are recycled from 1950...

i hope you enjoy the 50B chase. with the exception of the 53s (which i believe we've discussed before), it's got to be the best bowman set.

PSA 7's are actually quite affordable for the most part outside of some tough low numbers. Many common PSA 8's (not low numbers) can be had for $40-$45, which is below SMR.
  • Ditto more6 :-)

I love the 53 Bowman Color but decided not to go for it at this time due to 2 reasons: affordability and centering. I found it very tough to find a 53 B that's well centered where I've seen many "acceptable" centering in 50B in all grades. I will also be getting rid of my 64 Topps Giants (26 PSA 8s) to help the chase for the 50B. The 64 T Giants just take up too much space. Instead, I'll get 40 additional cards that includes HOFers between 1951-65.

It must be the VA water that we drink which makes us do the same things! :-)

    NGFRED -

I'd like a crack at some of those Giants cards if they're not already spoken for. Send me a PM or e-mail to: robasmith@mail.com

    Sorry to go OT guys.

Also sorry I don't have any 50B for you guys. That one is on my "list" though.
  • I'm not going to be competing with anyone anymore, because assuming that I get that card in the mail, I'm done.

The set is nuts. In my case it wasn't so much finding them cheap, it was finding them at all. A lot of the low numbers don't really exist, but by bidding very aggressively for a very long time I was able to do them eventually (I bought a complete set in order to get card #1, for example). I got tired of waiting on some of the highs, so I ended up paying double SMR on 8's from online dealers in order to try to get the last few. The last dozen cards took something like a year and a half.

If someone is willing to pay card shop prices for mid-grade, I know a local dealer that has some.

PSA-5 should be very doable from submissions, as there seem to be plenty of these cards out there in EX.

  • Bruce,
Can you email me the dealer's website or email? If they don't have one, I have a few left for my EX set (preferably raw, or PSA 5). Centering is my pet peeve.

Thanks to those of you who have written me about my PSAs. I'm also done clearing out my 6s and 7s. The 8s are about to go on ebay (some already have!)

    Take care,

  • I will simply advertise him here.

His name is Pete Brown. He runs a shop called Brown's Cooperstown, in Seattle WA. The phone number is (206) 632-1506 and his email is bcooperstown@uswest.net.

Pete has binders with lots of old stuff from T-cards on up. I haven't dug through his '50 Bowman for a while, but I'm sure he has some stuff in EX. This is not particularly strange or outstanding, but there it is. Pete's grading is about as good as you'll find, although not perfect (whose is?), and he has very high integrity.

You will not find high-grade there, because I bought it all, including a '59 Topps #50 Mays that came back PSA-9.

There are a few other dealers in Seattle that might have similar stuff. I assume there are dealers all across the country who have this stuff, but there is a phone number and an email address to start with.

  • Thanks Bruce.

Just thought I'd mention that this forum was a real quick way to get rid of PSA cards from my set.
I'm almost done with my 7s and my 6s are close to being out the door as well. No more 8s either.

Now its just me and these gorgeous 5s...

(Boy, if my wife saw me post that last comment....)

Now anyone want a head start on a PSA 8 set of 1950 Bowman Football?
The best way I can think of breaking up my 67% complete set (ebay didnt work the first time around selling as an entire lot) is to sell the high-end cards as singles on ebay w/o a reserve. Then Rick from MintState was gracious enough to offer to consign them for me.

    anj,

I would be interested in the Philadelphia Eagles Psa 8's from the Bowman set. If your
are selling let me know what your looking for. You can email me at tconte@comcast.net or pm me.
