Best Macro - Ease of use Camera?

marcmoishmarcmoish Posts: 6,315 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know this has been addressed already on previous threads, with Russ's Ricoh RDC-4300, (not really available anymore) and everyone elses Nikon Coolpix 990 & 995's.
But does anyone know what's the best current Ricoh or Nikon model to purchase for excellent macro (similar to those great shots on the threads)and ease of use?

    Marc,

Not sure why you'd want to buy a current model version of either, unless you just like to spend money. Both the earlier Nikons and Ricohs can still be easily found, and at a substantial savings.

  • Hi Mark,

I am a newcomer to collecting so not an expert by any means. I purchased a Nikon Coolpix 4500 which is working great. I will e-mail you some pictures so you can judge.

I'm hearing great things about HP's newest camera, 850. 7X digital zoom with 4.1 pixels. It's about $500.00. -It just came out about a month ago.

Russ, thanks for your comments...no I don't like to spend money, you misread it, I merely meant an updated version i.e. current available models!!!
I guess of your model (or others I mentioned) which I don't seem to find new on Ebay. Maybe I was not very clear either.

    RollmeupAbe...I'd very much appreciate that.........thanks

Braddick, sounds like a fab camera, haven't really seen anybody use HP for coin photos, at least not yet...or have I??..I'll take a peek at it on Steve's Digicam site...if its up there yet.

I use a Sony Mavica. Not sure whether that's better or worse than the other brands mentioned, but I am very happy with the photo quality up-close.

Hmm we're really getting somewhere here, thanks guys... so we've got the Ricoh RDC-5000 and the Sony Mavica now in the roundup.
Any additonal comments or observations from others out there? As in additonal genral comments, ease of use and photo clarity?

Many of the cameras are good. The most important factor in good coin photography, though, is the lighting and angles you use. Making sure your camera is set for the right lighting can make a world of difference.

I got a sony mavica 75fd it's really easy to use since it uses floppy disks to store the pictures no having to hook up cables.
I fit about 20 pictures on a floppy disk.
The rechargeable battery lasts about 100 pictures and comes with a recharger.
It costs about $300 from sony's online store.

It would be nice if you could find a ring light for the Mavica then you would have a centered even light source.

pmh1nic, I really like your pictures with the Ricoh RDC-5000. I guess I wish it had discs instead of cumbersome attachments to computer. Is the Ricoh as simple to use as the Mavica's??

It seem though the Sony Mavica that Coppercoins, Oldcameoproofsguy, and Placid have are popular. I gotta admit I like the photo results of the Ricohs's better than the Mavica though.......am I just being fussy?

Yes, I know about the lighting and angles end of it...but I need serious help here and an aspirin.

Any final closing arguments for those wishing to purchase a camera?

What sold me is I have a sony credit card and had enough points built up so the camera cost me $50 out of pocket image
