DAMON OUT IN PDX?
The Damon Stoudamire show is running thin in Portland, sources near the club say Damon is not only pressing for a change (trade?), but his public spats with the team may remove any chance of a reasonable deal, rather he may be sent packing to the first team that will take him. League sources say Damon’s contract has too much remaining on it to be of value alone, meaning the Blazers would have to part with something or someone of substance. The leading candidate in trade seems to be the Knicks, but sources close to the Blazers say there have been no talks of substances regarding Damon, but that if he and coach Cheeks do not mend the fence soon, a deal by the deadline seems inevitable.

E-ROB ON THE OUTS
If anyone believed Eddie Robinson was happy about the late season addition of Jalen Rose last summer, your kidding yourself, in fact word is Eddie requested assurances from the Bulls when Jalen was acquired that he was still in the game plan, much like Jamal Crawford, who is on the outs due to Jay Williams, E-Rob is on the outs not only because of Jalen but because of the play of guys like Trenton Hassell and Donyell Marshall, and E-Rob is not happy about it. The Bulls are currently carrying three players they have little plans on using (Robinson-14.9 mins, Crawford-18.3 mins and Marcus Fizer-14.4 mins), its been said all three could be had for an imposing big man, and there is talk that Chicago has talked with Denver at least once about Juwan Howard… once the giggles stop, consider that Howard is in the final year of his deal, and could pull off $20 million from the Bull’s cap number, and make them a significant player with the 2003 free agent class, something Jalen Rose is pressing for. It would take the bulk of the Bull’s roster to make such a deal so its unlikely, but should a team in a similar situation be looking to load up on young, (somewhat) promising talent, Chicago may be a player.

THE SPREE UPDATE
Latrell Sprewell played his first game of the season, logging 31 minutes and putting up somewhat normal numbers on 40% shooting from the field and scoring 16 points. The Knicks hope that the feud with Spree will die down now that he is back on the court, but league sources say that hasn’t stopped Scott Layden from making pitches for other players. He is not actively shopping Spree rather actively exploring who is available fro other teams – everyone knows who Scott is looking to move so he never has to say it. There have been ongoing rumors linking Spree to Portland, but Blazers sources say while as a team they have nothing but respect from Latrell, they simply do not have any interest in acquiring him at this point, sighting a very full roster at the swing man spots. The Phoenix Suns have apparently backed away from talks, while they have been dangling Penny Hardaway for Spree virtually straight up, the Knicks want more, and the Suns are not interested. The Heat became a Sprewell player last week, but Pat Riley is also looking to steal some talent from New York in a package deal said to include Brian Grant the problem there is Antonio McDyess. The Knicks are in no hurry to upset Dice, and adding another true forward would clearly do that, even if it meant Kurt Thomas headed to Miami. Mark Cuban personally shot down the rumors of a Spree for Nick Van Exel deal saying "There's no interest in trading Nick Van Exel for Latrell Sprewell. There's no interest in trading Nick Van Exel for some combination of guys on the Knicks. There's nothing there. There's always interest in trading for a good player, but what we'd be willing to offer they're probably not willing to take." and as for trading Shawn Bradley for the Knicks injury exception Cuban responded to reporters saying "Are you kidding me? No. We didn't use our $4.5 million exception. What good is it going to do to have another one from somebody else? No, no interest." So while media in New York tries to string together a decent deal to bring hope to the Knicks, internally they are saying Spree may be the best answer out there and are hoping for a strong return.

SOME SHOTS

BLASTING KARL: Paul Pierce was the latest member of Team US-Hey Where’s my shot, to take some shots at TEAM USA head coach George Karl saying "I learned not to go play USA basketball if George Karl is the coach... I don't think he's a players' coach, straight up. It wasn't only me, but a number of the players didn't respond to what he was saying or understand what he was trying to do. But me, I just play my part. I'm never going to question what he needs to do in practices, what he needs to do in games... We had a great coaching staff, Gregg Popovich... We had personalities on the coaching staff that you could get along with, but it was hard to read [Karl] at times, what he wanted out of certain people. Initially, my role on the team was that [Karl] needed me to be a guy who could score… That's what he told me my role was going to be. I accepted that. That's what I'm good at doing. Now, I do what he asked me to do and I become selfish and all these other things. You set yourself up for criticism when the team doesn't do well. That's the way it's always going to be and it's going to be directed toward the leaders of the team and I was one of the leaders of the team."

here's an idea by me:

i say the celtics or magic snag jamal crawford then we'd be talking excitement from those teams. image
