The Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention News Release For Immediate Distribution
The November 7-10, 2003 Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention was a tremendously strong numismatic business event that saw record dealer attendance, and record public attendance, at one of the most popular Coin and Currency Conventions in the world. Business was extremely brisk and active the entire weekend. Total public attendance for the Convention was 9782, with record public attendance noted during the first two hours the Convention on Friday, from 10 a.m. to Noon. Public attendance continued to be extremely strong on Saturday and those dedicated dealers that stayed for Sunday reported good solid business, both buying and selling, across a wide range of numismatic material. Convention sponsors Gordon W. Berg and Ed Kuszmar proudly announced that $3870.00 was raised for Children's Hospital from the Thursday "Super Bourse". Coin and Currency dealers came from all over the United States, and as far away as Russia, Italy, Mexico, Bermuda, Belgium, Canada and other countries. The total donations for Children's Hospital generated over the years from "Super Bourse" are now getting very close to the $150,000.00 figure. Over 130 non-tabled coin dealers attended on Thursday. Convention attendees enjoyed some wonderful weather, and of course some amazing meals in Little Italy.
All available bourse space in Halls A and B of the Baltimore Convention Center had been sold out early, and a waiting list accommodated several new dealers for last minute cancellations and fill-ins for some "wholesale only" dealers who depart early. An amazingly strong seven session Bowers and Merena Rare Coin and Currency Auction, and a very powerful Exonumia and Political Memorabilia Auction by Presidential Coin and Antiques, attracted many serious dealers, collectors and investors to the Convention. Friday and Saturday Educational Forum and numismatic club and organization meetings were well attended, and included The Bust Quarter Collector Society, The Maryland Token and Medal Society, Early American Coppers Club, Maryland State Numismatic Association, and The International Bank Note Society. Some of the clubs and numismatic organizations represented at the Convention included The American Numismatic Association, The Baltimore Coin Club and The Bowie Coin Club.
Several hundred youngsters, twelve and under, got to reach into a bucket full of numismatic goodies and took home the makings for new collectors. Many generous dealers and collectors helped keep the bucket filled up for the youngsters all weekend, and the last youngster on Sunday afternoon did very well.
A special Convention Souvenir Card was issued during the weekend depicting an extremely interesting 1834 Lottery Ticket, showing a burning building, and the special lottery approved by the General Assembly of Maryland in December of 1834. Probably issued in the Hagerstown Area (Washington County). The United States Post Office was on hand to hand-cancel the card on each day of issue (November 8, 9, and 10) and also served the dealers and public with a near full service postal station. Souvenir Cards may be available after the Convention. Contact Convention promoters for information.
During the Convention Mr. Gordon W. Berg announced that starting in 2004, The Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention would be expanding to three Conventions a year at the Baltimore Convention Center, and the tentative date for the new Summer Convention is July 9-11, 2004. As many more youngsters will be out of school for the summer a very special emphasis will be placed on Educational Programs for youngsters, and organized trips to the Baltimore Aquarium, The Baltimore Science Museum, The U. S. S. Constellation, and other great Inner Harbor attractions and historical sites. Special drawings, prizes, and the ever-popular Free Hand Full of Money for kids twelve and under, will keep the kids hunting for many modern key collector coins, that generous dealers and collectors donate.
Plans for the March 14-16, 2003 and the December 5-7, 2003 Conventions are well under way. A limited number of bourse tables for March 2003 are still available. Contacts: Gordon W. Berg, P. O. In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
Thanks for pointing that out to me.
Just kidding. By the way, how well does that air conditioning system work at the convention center. I once went there for some other convention during the summer and nearly died. Check it out next summer severa times to be sure. Also make sure you have penalty clauses in your contract for various stages of a/c system failures.
Also find a dealer or collector who KNOWS huge a/c systems and bribe him with a free table if you have to!
I've been to that show when it was hot. I don't recall if it was the Spring or Fall show, but the place was nicely a/c'ed. I *think* I was also there once during a Summer Mid-Atlantic show (in another part of the convention center), and it was fine.
I don't know how I feel about a 3rd show; I go to this show religiously, and it's a serious drain on my finances!!!

The summer session of the Baltimore show... will it have an auction as well? If so, by whom? (Bowers?)
Thanks,
