Here starts a new low for "slabbed coins" newbies beware!

everyones favorite ACG slab king now has his own label (I am pretty sure). this is going to make a bunch of new collectors very angry when they realize that the owner of the coin graded his own merchandise and slabbed it himself.

what do you guys think of this?

It says ACG on the slab. A decent looking coin, but not a 66.
    US Navy CWO3 retired. 12/81-09/04

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.
  • Says ACG on the lower right obverse of slab.

At least he is not making it too difficult to identify.

S&G, that's Sue & Garry. The slab says ACG at the bottom corner. Sneaky!
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • can you tell where it says acg? i sure don't see it. i do realize it is a acg slab but it says S&G rare coins and he slabbed it himself.

Well - it's in an ACG holder so that throws a red flag out there immediately.

I will say this - and I say it with great reservations - Lately I've seen some not too awfully graded ACG coins that have come back fresh to dealers. Yesterday I saw two "MS66" 1962 Franklins that would grade 65 in PCGS slabs. This is an improvement I think over the 2+ point differential that we're used to seeing on ACG slabs. As for the above 1921-S, it really doesn't look that bad from the picture - though it'd have to be a pretty cold day in hell for me to bid on this at that level. Maybe that's a newby mistake on my part, but if the coin was in a true auction, given the date, I might take a gander at it. And yes people - I do realize that ACG slabs have a long way to go before they garner any general trust so don't even go there image

All the wierdness of S&C vs AGC aside, I kind of like the coin. I am not saying that there are no problems, I just think it look ok in the scan.
  • How long have these slabs (S&G Coins) been around? Has condor101 made any comments about these slabs?

not defending ACG or anything, but isn't that better than a stapled cardboard 2x2 with MS66 written on it? you get a slightly better holder for your money, anyways. besides, if CoinWorld can sell "make your own slab" kits, why can't ACG? Gary and Sue probably grade better than ACG too, hehe image
  • I agree with Crito - look at an ACG slab and you're looking at a raw coin in my book - evaluate the coin and see if it's worth pursuing, if not - move on. I don't care if it says S&G or LMNOP, its in an ACG holder so I'll treat it as such.
