Required Packaging of Coins Submitted to PCGS?

Must all coins submitted to PCGS be in 2X2 flips? I have some Modern Commem.'s image I would like to submit but don't want to take them out of their airtite government holders.

  • I've actually spoken to PCGS support and Charlie about this.

PCGS wants us to use the crunchy, 2.5x2.5 flips (non PVC) for all submissions - they're much easier to get the coin out of.

It is OK, if not desireable, to submit the commems and such in their plastic capsules shipped inside the crunchy flip. That makes it all the more safe when it gets through PCGS' staging area. They're only too happy to remove them from the capsule for you during grading. The same is true for whole proof sets and Silver proof Eagles.
  • Can you direct me to a source for these 2..5X2.5 "crunchy flips". I live in a semi-remote area and the nearest coin shop is over an hour away.

I ordered them fron PCGS. They are fairly reasonably priced, but their shipping is a little high.

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.
  • PCGS is good. I've also ordered from Kelgory. The SaFlip brand is the only way to go for submissions - they help prevent hazing during shipment to PCGS. They're more money, but they are well worth every cent.

PCGS sent me Saflips with my signup kit. That's what I'm buying from now on. my local dealer carries supersafe brand flips, which are fine too (and cheaper) but they're 2x2's and you have to tear them out of a sheet. think I'll get them from PCGS @ $10 for 100, since I don't need the inserts or box... plus I also need a roll of those @#$% little stickers image might as well get the $6 acrylic display for my Ionian 2 Obol while I'm at it, hehe... sure would be easier if I could order from website, tho (probably would have already.) image

I use the polybags. Then the poly bag goes into the crunchy flip.
Then the sticker for the outside. Then wrap all thoses in that bubble paper.
If it the coin is in a plastic holder, just put that in the crunchy flip.

Regardless of what is written of what they prefer, PCGS will accept pretty much any flip. I'm using the PVC flips. For me the mailing to PCGS takes 1 day and with the grading time about 2 weeks, I'm not worried about it. However, for modern proofs I'd be more concerned.

You do not need to take the coins out of the mint packaging as long as you want all the coins to be graded by them. You cannot ask them to remove the half and cent and grade those and ship the 5¢, 10¢ & 25¢ back.

For those stickers, just go to Office Depot and get a box of the small Avery stickers. I got something like 1500 for under $3. In fact, if you aren't submitting more than one invoice to PCGS, then you don't even need the stickers. Even if you are, as long as you don't mix the coins up it is OK not to use the stickers.

Maybe it's an unfounded fear, but sometimes wonder if I make life too difficult for them, they might take it out on my grades image guess I'll try printing the labels with my inkjet next time then, gets REALLY tiring writing the same freakin' invoice number over and over again... and how is that going to help find my generic modern proofs when the invoice gets lost (OK, I'd have to lose my copy too, but still...) think I'll put my customer number on there also -- maybe a little paranoid, but as Intel chairman Grove said "only the paranoid survive", hehe image JK, sorta.

crito, the graders don't know how you put the labels on. PCGS puts a label on top of your label. You can write on the flip with a marker if you like.
