three little indians cents- guess the grades

I had fun guessing the grade on jtryka's gold indian so I thought I put up a few indian cents to guess the grades on. I had a little problem with shadows on the left and right of the coins so take that into consideration that the color of these coins are uniform on the whole coin. They are all PCGS graded the 1898 is in a old small rattle holder, the 1905 in a green holder and the 1897 in the blue holder. Good luck mike

Paul- I was hoping for an in depth answer from you as you alway's seem to describe indian cents beautifully. They are all graded MS64 red by PCGS. thanks guy's I hope you had fun and I will try to do this again soon. mike

This just shows what I have discovered the past 6 months in collecting ms64 red PCGS IHC's and I am sure it is true at NGC, there is a wide variance in what they call 64 reds. You don't see enough 63's out there to make this judgment. Since I don't collect 65's in red I can't comment on them.

The 1905 looks like a blast MS66 with satiny smooth fields that got knocked down 2 points for the prints, flecks and toning area on the obverse. It would be easy undergrade this coin if you didn't notice how beautiful the underlying surfaces are.

My only question about the 1898 was the obverse color, it looks gem condition-wise and undergraded. Maybe what I see as brown highlights are really breaks in the toning, hence the lower grade but the RD attribution.

The 1897 looks deep red but the obverse has a lot going on. Hard to believe its the same grade as the 1898.
