Just curious what others will grade this seated dime.

Don't know what happened here, I had a pic of a coin.

  • Interesting FCloud - is there generally a one grade difference in these coins between NGC and PCGS?

    Bytheway Dimeman - great coin!

I don't know, but it is my guess. I am told the people at NGC like toning alot and heard from some dealers that they feel NGC bonuses toned. As you can see by my tag line I prefer Blast White. But this coin has a real nice look.

    PCGS MS-61xxxxx change that to a 62

    NGC MS-62xxxxxx change that to a 63.

    Hard to tell for sure.

    Jon,

    I would grade it 65.

I don't know if you collect varieties, but this may have a repunched one. Look for the repunching on the top left of the 1. Looks like a "split" in the point of the 1. Nice variety if it does.

I bought one about 4 years ago after losing it at an auction. What I mean by that is, I was "day dreaming" when the lot came up. image. When I realized it was being sold, it was too late. It went for $75. I later bought it from the winning bidder for $350. He had it graded, it came back MS63. You win some, you lose some. image

Well, I hope the graders like it as much as you guys did. I bought the coin as a AU58 raw. I will send it in later when I pick out some other coins to send in with it.

    Thanks for the responces.

Good luck dimeman.......the luster will be the key as I could not see the luster and assumed it was due to the toning.

That would be interesting to see how it works out.

By the way, was that a scan or a digital photo?

  • Nice coin. IMO it really can go either way. There looks like there may be SLIGHT rub on her left knee. IMO this coin could go AU58 or MS63/4. MS63 on its technical merits, MS64 because of the well above average strike for this date/mm. Nice coin... Who did you pick it up from?

  • Concerning NGC vs PCGS grading on these babies. It is my opinion that NGC is actually the better service when it comes to seated dimes. Sure, ive seen my share or overgraded NGC dimes, but I can easily say the same for PCGS. IMO, this is one of the series where NGC does much better than PCGS. Look at the greysheet, NGC coins sell about the same as PCGS coins do.

Jon...Get it in a holder an we can talk turkey...but I must admit I usually don't pay as much for Seated dimes as Jason Carter.

    Dimeman,

You have an error in the link. You have TWO slashes after ``attachments'' when you should only have one. Perhaps some browsers can handle that properly, but mine barfs...

From looking at the scan, I also agree with KK that the grade could range from ChAU to ChMS. I've seen a lot of Seated Dimes, and they all look nice -- like that coin -- with a naked eye, but they're all graded no higher than the midling MS range.

Now, the gem specimens really look nice!!!

I just thought it was a really pretty coin. Hope PCGS likes the toning as much as I do and don't BB it.

    Jon
  • Super coin....but 18 months later now....how did come back from the PCGS...and is it still in your collection?

Would be great to hear "the rest of the story."

    Thanks.

    Go well.

It hasn't been 18 months. I just got the coin in a recent B&M auction. The coin does have nice luster as someone earlier asked. The strike is very good as you can see in the pic. It does have some very light hairlines. I have not sent it in yet, will post the results when I do. My guess is any where between 58 and 63.

    Jon
  • Jon,

My mistake. I'm getting my months and days mixed up lately. I look forward to hearing how it came back.

    Take care.

Ahhh yes, the hairlines. The look of a gem, but lightly cleaned at one time. The perfect auction coin. At least they sold it to you as an au coin. It has excellent eye appeal, but a looker like that would almost always be found in a slab. Good luck on the donation, er, uh, submission imageimage

I haven't sent it in yet. I have several coins I would like to send in but the guy I send in with is not happy with PCGS right now and has let his membership run out. Maybe sometime in the future. I was really surprised to see this thread again.

    Jon,

I had forgotten about this thread too. I was anxious to see what it graded, only to find you hadn't sent it in. image

In my reply to your post I said:

Did you look to see if it's a RPD? Just curious.
    Dan

    Dan,

It is the RPD with the split in the serif of the 1. I think a lot of them have that.

    Jon
  • I grade it a AU58. No one in his right mind will sell a MS for AU unless he knows nothing about coins.
Glenn. (after all a AU58 is a 64 with little wear)
  • Any verdict yet? Do you still own the dime?
    Go well.

I run into lots of "idiots" selling MS coins as AU.
