Merc People WANTED--guess the grade this 1918 Mercury I scored today at the Kenosha show...answered!

Take a look at this 1918, tell me what you think and guess the grade.

Now included in my set is a MS62FB 1918

It may grade higher but I paid a MS62FB price!

Hey it took a hour and a half to get this reply in but here goes again. image

Anyway the Dime appears to have a nice strike for the 18P or any 18 dime.. Some weakness in One on the reverse but nothing real uncommon with that. Seems to have a few fairly large contact marks on the obverse and the luster appears to be a little weak on the obverse. I'll say 63FB or 64FB. Nice Dime I sure would not kick it out of My Collection.

BTW. I received the 18P MS65FB coin from Heritage that was bought. Not White like yours but Deep Tone in places.

I agree with fairlaneman: Look how the cartwheel is more diffused on the obverse than the reverse.

Also is that a nasty scratch at the base of the neck or is that on the slab?

    I vote MS63FB.

The scratch is on the coin, but the light must have caught just right. It doesn't look that bad in person.

I'll say 63FB. Pretty nice coin but some contact marks. Could even be a 62 the way they grade. My 16-D is better than this coin and it came back 62 again!!

  • My vote is for MS63 FB. Nice coin!

I'm guessing by your enthusiasm that it is a 65fb, but it looks like a nice 64FB to me, which I would be happy with.

    C'mon tell us what it graded . . .

Well I was hoping to get more responces. I really think the coin is an upgrade canidate. But I don't know if I will bother sending it in. You see I bought the coin--not the holder. It is going into my registy set as it is...

My set is The A. R. Savino Collection

The coin is in a green labeled holder.

    MS62FB

When I saw it I thought WOW--that's only a 62! So I think it was a good deal!

And the group here seems to consistantly go higher, so that is good news. Thank you everyone for your responces.

    Tony:

To Go 62 I would say the coin must have some fairly heavy slide marks on it or some hair lining which we cannot see from a scan or picture. Take a good look at it under some good light and with 10 power and see if you see any of this. They just kill these babies for hair lining and slide marks.

The only thing that tells me that they graded it 62, is there appears on my monitor to be a big hit on her neck. They might have downgrade it a couple of grades for it.

    Ken,

I use a 20x, and yes there are a few hair lines, but not really any slide marks. I still think a regrade would take it up to a 63. The reverse is better than the obverse.

Any merc collectors seen a 1943-S where the die has been polished so much that the entire coin looks whizzed through a loupe, and PL to the naked eye? I saw one recently. It was bizarre. I don't have a photo to show. And a pre-emptive statement -- I know the difference between the raised lines of die polishing and the grooves of whizzing. This coin had raised die polishing lines.

"Grooves of Whizzing" (not to be confused with the dance I do when I go to the bathroom!)

    Tony:

Remember that the Focal point on a coin is the obverse. So if the problems are on the obverse your chances for up-grade are diminished.

    Doug:

I had a 34P that was somewhat like you are describing. Die polish marks were everywhere. Naked Eye the coin looked great but put a loupe on it and all Hell broke loose in the fields and on the Lady herself. Sometimes I really wonder if the graders get minute die polish mixed up with hairlines in thier haste to grade coins.

Another explaination that someone on the Coin Board came up with was the use of a Wire Brush to clean up a Rusted Die. Seemed quite logical to me.

I wouldn't waste my time or money trying to upgrade this coin. And besides there is only $18 diff between 60 and 63 bid. Just wait and buy the grade you want in the holder if it is the grade you want and the coin you want.

    Jon,

You are right. I will not send it in for an upgrade. I am perfectly happy with a MS62FB designation! I have alreaded added it to my set.

Nice unquestion choice and if not choice, then so close to choice that no one cares as to the difference. .

    KKid,

I purchased it from the guy in the middle facing Lake Michigan (he had his 6 year old daugher with him--she was coloring/watching tv). He had a few early coins, but this was the best one.

Again came in to late to get to play, but my guess before I read on through was 63FB. May not be worth the price to submit for an upgrade, but has to make you feel good that the coin is better than the plastic!
