My red morgan dollar

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
She may not be uncirculated, but she is a nice red dollar! It's not AT, all the diagnostics work for this toning. Not sure how the toning came to be, though. But I like her. I would say she was cheap, but that would be rude of me. image

Interesting toning nwcs. Nice. Tomato juice maybe? image Coin looks AU. Where'd you get it?

Yeah, I was struck by the red for sure. I got it at a local coin shop. The seller doesn't deal with toning all that much so I've been cherry picking interestingly toned coins. Probably none of them are that much of a premium, but fun to have something different. I believe it is AU53 myself.

    Neil,

Me too. I'm not sure why, but I've really become interested in color. BTW - nice dollar.

Nice coin, I have never seen a 21 that color before, some gold toned ones but never a red one. Good find.

I'm finding that as I learn more and collect more, I can appreciate toned coins better and be more confident in getting them. Have you all felt that way about toning?

Neil - Me too. I have really learned to appreciate that look. I guess it is an acquired taste, but I'm drawn.

It hasn't been until the last couple of years that I have apprectiated a toned coin. Everthing used to have to be blast white or strictly coppery looking to me. It's interesting to me that I no longer feel that way. You can appreciate an Ansel Adams black and white photo and a Van Gogh picture both, I guess this is my feeling about coin toning.

Speaking of red morgans, I paid around 60 bucks for this one about 2 years ago, had a dealer offer me $450 for it today.1883O

    Mike,

That coin is a killer. How is the obverse?

The obverse is very lustrous with some gold rim coloring, btw its not AT its in an NGC65 holder.

Edited to add: I have seen this coloring pattern referred to as christmas tree
