What is shill bidding?

I keep reading about it here on the forum. Is it where a seller has another ebay user name and they drive the price of their auctions up?

Comments

  • That or having someone else bid on their auction with the purpose of increasing the price.

  • Shill bids are not fair. I once was a high bidder on a nicely toned slabbed mercury dime. In the last few seconds the coin was bid up by the same guy who happens to bid up most of this guys auction. I still won but I had to pay 50% more on the coin. I did some investigation and sure enough, it was happening every auction cycle for this particular seller. I filed a report with EbaY and bingo, he was NARU'ed from Ebay! I felt a little guilty because I liked buying from this seller. I didn't want it to be true.

I had a similar situation in the past, where i was bidding on paticular coin, and was run up at the last minute, but fortunately I did not take it to the highest bid, when the seller responded back to me with in a few hours saying that the high bidder backed out and he would sell it to me at my second high bid, I said no way ?

I knew that there was no possible way that he could have had a comunication with the so called high bidder that fast and knew that it was going to be a voided sale
