Are You an Actual Coin Collector??

Please ask yourself the following questions:

1) When looking at an NGC coin you like and want to buy, do you secretly ask yourself "what are the chances it will cross to PCGS"?

2) Have you ever sold or traded away a really premium NGC coin for a lesser quality PCGS one of the same date and grade so you could include it your PCGS registry set?

3) Have you ever purchased a PCGS coin that you weren't really happy with at all but you needed it to fill an open slot in your PCGS registry set?

4) Have you ever traded away (or sold outright) a PCGS coin plus cash for the same date coin in the next higher PCGS grade that was really no better than the one you traded away, but it gives you extra points in your registry set?

5) Do you really not even see the whole point of building a complete set of a certain series other than for 'Registry purposes' and competition, and being #1 ?

6) Have you ever purchased certain coins that you would have never even CONSIDERED buying if it wasn't for your registry set?

7) Is a PCGS pop. report an important "decision maker" for you as to the desirability and value of a certain coin?

8) Have you ever checked the PCGS "online status report" more than 5 times in one day cause you just couldn't wait to add that coin to your registry set?

9) Have you ever said to your wife "honey, don't worry, the mortgage can wait, this is a pop. 2 coin,,,,,can't you understand that??"

Now be honest,

If you answered yes to 2 or more of these questions, you're starting to slip away and need an immediate anti-PCGS vaccination shot.

If you answered yes to 5 or more of these questions, it's too late for the vaccination, you have serious "Registry Issues" and you need to see a qualified therapist right away.

If you answered yes to all nine questions, you are waaaay past the therapy stage and beyond all help,,,,,so just go with it, enjoy, and keep telling yourself,,,,,"hey, I'm sure other people feel the same way I do"

What if the answer is no to all of the above? Then what do I need?

That goes for me too! Yes, I have several modest registry sets here and I have even started, but not finished , creating a couple across the street. I guess perhaps I haven't been bitten by the PCGS bug too badly becaue I have as many NGC and ANACS coins as PCGS. All past attempts at crossovers have been from ANACS to NGC....

I collect what I love, not what strokes my ego.......does this make me a collector?

i collect mostly vf and higher type, favoring coins minted before 1930,keys,varieties,some uncs as i can afford 'em...

changing the subject briefly to amuse you all:

the most ridiculous remark i ever heard about coins came out of the mouth of a person at a Denver coin show...

he said,"very fine coins are dogs, for dogs"....

insult me,insult my mother but don't insult my dogs...what a turkey...

  • No to all nine questions,I collect for the sheer fun of it, not to compete.
Friends are Gods way of apologizing for your relatives.
  • I`m working on a complete set of Peace Dollars and will take some time to complete. To me they`re 24 silver dollars with a design I like. Lately, whenever I look at the back of a Peace Dollar, It jumps out at me and the Eagle is big and bold and I love it. I have the same sentiments with the front side of the Morgan Dollar and the Bust Half Dollar. It`s just happens to be part of the registry and the registry isn`t why I collect coins. I`ve been tempted by the registry but realized that if I gave in it would erode my enjoyment for the hobby and the coins that I like.
  • I was "Yes" on 4 of the questions. I already knew I needed help but this confirms it.

I answered yes to two of the questions. Number 6 I answered yes because I did not know about certain varieties, such as the Accent Hair Kennedy. I like PCGS, but I am still a collector.

I guess since I don't collect anything in slabs in the first place, I must be an "Actual Coin Collector".

I think I'm still okay at this point. I only answered yes to 6. I am collecting the PR69DCAM State Quarters. I started with the silver coins only and chose to get the clad coins, too. You can laugh now!

  • Yes,No,Yes*,No,No,No,Yes+,No#,No.

*This isn't just for PCGS coins. I've bought raw coins that I wasn't 100% into but I was
sick of having that empty hole for so long so I buy an OK filler while I wait for a better
    coin to come along.

+You've got to be kidding. Are you saying with raw coins that the total mintage doesn't
have an effect on how rare you think it is and how much you value it? If so you must not
have any key dates in your sets because everyone else values rarer coins more and pays
more for them. No difference with PCGS slabbed coins.

#I've done it but not so much because of excitement of adding to my registry. More for
the excitement of an expert confirming that I found a coin I was looking for.

Absolutely, I have not submitted to PCGS since 1989 and probably never will. If I buy a PCI or IGC coin I don't wonder if it will cross anywhere. My only thought is "is the coin worth the money being asked?" without regard to the listed grade or future prospect of what it might grade. I would never attempt to cross a coin, if I don't like the holder it is in I crack it out and submit it raw tot the service of my choice.

  • No to all 9! Probably 5 or so of the 48 varieties of Fugio copper in my collection originally came in slabs. The one ACG slab was actually dead on for grade! The couple of PCGS coins were grossly overgraded. The other couple of coins were ANACS and I really can't remember what kind of grades they had on them. Needless to say the coins were liberated from their plastic tombs as soon as they entered my collection and have been very happy ever since.

A collector after my heart! I'd love to see some of those Fugios (now liberated from their tombs of course). Copper has always been an interest of mine, although I'm just now starting to work my way back in dates to the beginning of the 20th century...I still have a way to go before reaching even the large cents - much less colonials.
