eBay Morgan scam alert -- 1921-D PCGS MS66

DennisHDennisH Posts: 13,991 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hello everyone!

Looks like there's a skunk in the woodpile. Take a look at eBay #801918487. The seller claims it's a PCGS-66 1921-D.

I sent an e-mail saying: "What is going on here? The photo in your ad is of a coin that is not in a PCGS holder, and at best is XF45."

The seller replied: "Whatever you say. But your sadly mistaken........"

(Great speller too, huh?)

How does one go about reporting this kind of stuff to the eBay cops?

I just send the following mesage:

<< <i>PLEASE FEEL FREEE TOEMAIL ME FOR MORE INFO.
Can you please send me scans of the correct coins? The ones you have posted can't be right. There's nothing Mint State about any of them. These are all well worn coins and are not holdered. Thanks. >>

    Should be an interesting answer.

I asked him if he has pictures of the actual coins on two of his auctions. Can't wait to see the reply.

I asked him/her/it for a certification number on the '21-D. Got to give him/her/it a nugget of credit, it was for a 1921-D Morgan.

    But PCGS says it's only a 65.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I just got a reply from DIANE. She emailed me a picture of an ANACS walker that is MS61, but the ad is advertised as MS62 and the picture in the ad looks COMPLETELY different from what she sent me and the description of the coin.

I emailed him to let him know that coin misrepresentation is a violation of FTC rules under the Hobby
Protection Act. I am eager for a response.

The scan of that Walker was made off of a printed (magazine, newspaper, etc) original. You can tell by the moire pattern (a printing industry term) or pixelation distortion.

I just received the same scan as Endocrinologist. Definitely not the same coin.

this is yet another case of obvious misrepesentation...

unfortunately, ebay just doesn't have the resources (investigators) to nip this kind of thing in the bud...

i've been wanting to recommend to them that they have people with some kind of numismatic knowledge on their staff...just haven't done so...

i've bought a number of really nice coins from ebay sellers...

you guys doing the emailing, asking the questions of this seller...thumbs up to you all...image

  • The coin is a BB whizzed, would not even get a grade. I would pay melt for it.

It's a scam. I sent an email on two of her, yes her auctions asking if she had actual pictures. She politely responded and said "Here, I hope this helps", with a link that took me right back to the auctions with the phoney pictures. It's a scam.

I just got an email from her, saying that "I am sorry, I am only human and working on the problem"
, in the meantime people could be bidding on an whizzed XF 1921D instead of a PCGS-66!!!!!!!!!!

    WHERE'S THE D???

I looked at the Walking Liberty's (she must have 2 of them the same) and was trying to tell if it was an obverse or reverse mintmark - but couldn't see it

Oh, the D must be in uniteD states

I got another reply from her when I informed her that her links in the previous email took me back to the auctions and that i thought it was a scam. Her reply, "Have a nice day".

I just buried her with a half dozen eMails for each auction. Hopefully if we keep hitting her, she'll get the mesaage that she's nailed and shut down voluntarily before somebody gets taken.

lets see...an MS66 '21-D must be at least R6...R5 for 65's according to Miller...fully-struck breast feather pieces are very hard to find...fifty bucks is opening bid on this coin...

Question for seller:Is the coin shown in the pictures the coin that i would be bidding on?
if the answer is yes, advise the seller that as a potential buyer you are concerned that the coin in the pictures does not appear to be one-and-the-same as the coin advertised in the auction title and that you suspect intent to defraud which you will report to authorities unless they change the title of their auction to more accurately describe their item...give 'em a time deadline for the change before you will report...if they ignore your request...report to the FTC...

  • I am fairly new to this PCGS message board and I must say that I am very impressed with the dedication that you are showing to rid our hobby of fraud and impostors. It would be all too easy to see a scam like this and do nothing.

Congrats on your vigilance. Hopefully the TV show coin-selling scam artists are next.

  • Thanks for pointing these auctions out to us, but please people, NEVER bid when

    1. The picture doesn't match the description, and the only descriptions are vague (i.e. lovely coin, blah, blah), no serial # or anything.

    2. The seller types in ALL CAPS. ALL CAPS or all lower case is very often a bad sign, as any professional seller will get this right.

Especially when either 1. or 2. is true, and the seller has low feedback, not bidding should be a no-brainer.

I'm surprised the eBay police haven't pulled the auctiuons yet. They are usually pretty prompt when they get a lot of alerts from different sources.

  • Thought I would rattle the cage in a different manner, so I sent the following email:

    Hi Parkermiley,
I am interested in bidding on several of your autions. In an effort to save the shipping costs, I would like to know if I can pick up the coins in person. I live in Orlando and work in Longwood. Please let me know so that I may bid accordingly. Thanks!

If she is really auctioning coins that she doesn't own, then how do you think she'll respond to a request to pay when picking them up? image

I'll let you know if he/she replies.
  • Darn! That was quick!

    Her reply"
Sure I see no Problem with that..........

I guess I have to bid now, huh! image

Actually, I may very well bid now. I certainly won't pay for a coin that isn't what was advertised, and if they are what was advertised, then my competition should be scarce giving me a good chance to win it cheap! image
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
She sent me three of the bogus scans. It looks like she figured out what I was doing by the fourth eMail since that one had no attachment, and she stopped responding after.

I sent her a few emails- one for each auction... those are at the bottom... she replied with pictures to all but one, where she added text... the best part was when she asked if I was "dunk" and that she took her photos out of the phone book... by the way, I don't 'dink' imageimage

    ----------------------
    her:

What bait? Are you dunk? Ya I took the photos from a magazine, no better yet
the phone book. I have work to do please shop hassling me.

THIS WILL DISAPPOINT YOU BUT I HAVE HAD SO MUCH POSITIVE EMAIL THAT I SIMPLY
    DELETE YOURS.

    -------
    me:

    > Ok- your wish is my command... Your pictures are taken from magazines, and
    I
    > wouldn't like to be scammed... I will make a mental note not to bid.
    >
    > And I should add that the walker you showed me is an MS61, NOT a 62... and
    > Morgan dollars weren't the same design as walking liberty half dollars...
    >
    > Nice try, but I'm not taking the bait, and I pray no one else does,
    either.
    >
    > Please feel free to block me from bidding on your auctions!

    ------her:
    >
    > > PLease do not bid on any of my items, I would rather give them away,
    then
    > to
    > > deal with someone like you.

    ---me (WLH):

    > > > "THR PICTURES ARE SELF EXPLANATORY" Yes, this coin is VG, not MS62
    ANY
    > > DAY! If you have a cert number, please send it to me, as this coin
    cannot
    > > be the one pictured...

    -----me (SLQ):
    > Yes, that is a PQ VG coin!!! No where near MS64, though, and not in an
NGC holder. Don't say I can't grade- I know my stuff.
    >
    > Do the right thing and change your auctions- this is a scam... I may very
    well contact eBay.

----me (Morgan- went easy on this one):
    > Hi,
    >
    > Could I have the cert. number of that coin? Your scan doesn't make it
look MS, and I want to check for myself...

Check out her auctions this morning. Three have bids on them. All the same bidder too, with a feedback rating of 20. It's my opinion, that there is no one out there who would bid on these auctions with the pictures that are shown. Probably some one she knows or is in on the scam.
