Proof 70-NOT DCAM-Regrade, keep, return?

I just bought a 1983 PCGS pr70 washington in an old green holder. I thought it was a DCAM but when it arrived, it was only a 70. The coin's beautifully struck, full DEEP cameo, no spots, etc. The only "problem" is a little blue haze/toning around the obverse rim covering about 2% of the obverse. I don't know what the pop is on just a 70 vs the 70dcam. I got the coin for $140, should I return the coin, keep it as an example of a proof 70, or send it to PCGS and take a HUGE gamble at 70 DCAM(not likely!!!). I have a 1968 DCAM Kennedy in an old green holder so I know they were issued, is this when PCGS started issuing the cam/dcam designations? Thanks for any inputs! Ray

  • Well - do you like it? and did you pay a good price for it? - I guess if you're comfortable with it - keep it - if not - send it back!

I bought the coin to try and complete a 1983 PCGS proof 70DCAM proof set, but, without the 25c, it won't be complete. I DO like the coin, but, it doesn't fit my needs right now, I'm concentrated on a couple other sets. I don't know how to post a picture but if you send me your E-mail address I'll send it to you for posting. Thanks! Ray

Why not keep it. The coin sounds good. A little toning is acceptable. You can send it into PCGS under their regrade option. Do not crack it out, just send it in the holder. It will come back in a new holder and is guaranteed not to have a lower grade. But, it could get either the CAM or DCAM designation added if PCGS believes it is appropriate.

Does anyone have access to the PCGS POP report? Mine has expired. I have a hard copy of the Jan 01 POP report and there is only a POP of "1" in PCGS pr70. Is this still true? If so, it would be my only POP 1 and actually might be worth it to keep as an oddity. It's just as nice or even nicer that my other PCGS 70 DCAM Kennedies. Thanks in advance for any assistance! Ray

The are 36 graded PR70DCAM, the CU price for it is $350 and the price for a 69DCAM is $35. I would send it in for a regrade. The pop does not list PR70s, just DCAMs...
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • There is a single 1983 graded PR70 and none graded PR70CAMEO. For what its worth, there are 32 graded without a cameo or DCAM designation: 4 in PR67; 16 in PR68; 11 in PR69 and 1 in PR70. and there is a lone PR67CAMEO graded. But the bottom line is that if it is a nice coin, I would send it in for a regrade and maybe get the cam or dcam designation---if not, then re-ask the question regarding how it fits with your current needs/desires.

MadMarty: on the PCGS pop report, there is a box at the top where you can enter a PCGS coin number. As you probably know, the CAM and DCAM coins have an 8 and a 9 respectively, in front of the coin number---so if you enter 6019 into that box you get a display of the non-cam/non-dcam 1983-s; and 86019 gets you the cameos.

Do not send it in as a regrade, send it in for deignation review. They are two different things. With designation review, they will simply decide if it deserves the CAM/DCAM designation. If regrade, you might end up with a 69. Write across the invoice in big letters "designation review for deep cameo".

And, yes, there are deep cameos in green holders that were done before they started using the designation. Fewer and fewer as time goes on, but they're still out there.

  • raycyca - Keep it as it is!!!! You got a coin that received a 70 when 70s were a rare thing to come by. It's a DCAM and you know it - it's just as deserving of a spot in a registry set as a DCAM designated coin - I mean are you worried what others are gonna think of you? Poor guy...... couldn't afford a real 70.......... image Another case of buy the coin not the holder........... and screw anyone who thinks less of the coin! If nothing else keep it as an oddity for your collection - you can always pick up a "real" 70DCAM at a later date. Besides like you said - it's a pop 1 coin image

Thanks for the input. I think I will keep the coin. Like I said, it's easily a DCAM, I wish I could post a photo but when I try it rejects it. It's a very nice coin and POP 1 to boot. I don't care what others may think about only being a 70 as I already have other 70DCAMs in my Kennedy set. I will hunt for another 1983 quarter in 70DCAM to complete my 1983 pr70DCAM proof set and keep this as an oddity/rarity. Like Osiris stated"it was made when 70's were RARE, not "common" as DCAM 70's are today(comparitivly speaking). Of course there's no such thing as a "common" 70DCAM but in the past years PCGS has made a bunch of them. image

    Ray,

Thanks for sending me the photo. I had to make the images smaller to be able to post the picture.

    Everyone,

Have a look at this beauty!

Thanks Fcloud for posting the photos. I guess I'll be keeping the POP 1 PR70 and look for another 1983 PR70DCAM to fill the hole.

    Ray,

Why keep it as a PR70 and shop for a 70DCAM. Do what Russ suggests and send it for designation review. Odds are you'll get it back as a 70DCAM. As long as you send it for designation review, it can only get better (i.e., 70 CAM or 70 DCAM) not worse (they will not return it as a 69 or lower as long as you go for designation review).

Didn't PCGS skip the DCAM designation on many (if not all) of the earlier graded moderns?
