Posting 1892 Columbian Doubling

I previously posted a question concerning possible doubling of the 1892 Columbian. Someone on the board suggested using a loop to zero in on the date to show the forum. Also doubled is Chicago and World. I do not have a picture of that. Cherrypicker"s top 150 lists this 1892 as a RPD. I'm not sure if that means repunched die or date. Cherrypickers lists it as C-000.5 Columbian 1892 RPD. Please note that the stars are also doubled. My guess is that this is strike doubling and not a double die but it sure it interesting. The doubling is evident on much of the reverse.

  • A local collector and friend of mine here recently found one of these Columbians and sent it off to ANACS, came back machine doubling. Looks like the same doubling that his exhibited, still a cool coin IMO.

Yeah, strike doubling. I had the same thing in a 1964D quarter. Got me excited, too. But ended up a bit disappointed. WOuld have been cool, though, if was real. Still is cool, though, if you ask me. image

Ogden, I have one just like it. I showed it to several graders at ANA Summer Camp last year and they all said it was machine doubling. Still a really neat coin!!!

Ogden, I see the camera trick worked out pretty good image. I agree with the others that it is strike doubling. mike

  • Thanks guys and a special thanks to Mike for the tip on really zeroing in with the help of a loop. I would have never thought of it. Now I just need something to keep the darn camera steady!
