Does this one look like a shill bidder to you guys?

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
It looks suspicious to me. Since this is a no reserve auction, there's no reason for all those bids right in a row.

Not to me. Looks like hotrod doesn't like getting told he's been outbid. Probably going up $1 at a time

Does a bear sleep in the woods?
Check the seller's feedback for lots of neat in a row repeat winners.
  • I would say no, because in his bid history it shows he has not bid on any other of the seller's items
  • The bidder's been registered for a couple of years with only 2 feedbacks. Maybe just a case of not knowing how to bid... just inching it up until they get high bid?

Well, that's the Devil's Advocate view. But, it does look fishy.

    Edit: More Devil's Advocate....
The seller does have alot of in-a-row sales to different buyers, but most of it is really low-cost stuff. The one's I checked out were sheets of stamps, mostly. People probably buying a bunch and getting combined shipping.

I don't think it's a shill. Same bid pattern on 4 different auctions, all by different people. In at least one of them he didn't take over the top spot before quitting.

Has been on ebay since Feb 1999, has one pos FB from Mar 99, one neutral from Apr 01. Very inactive member to be a shill, I think.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Your right guys. Sorry for my 2 second preliminary analysis. I should have delved further before spouting a conclusion. This one's suspicious-looking but not when you look at seller's other open auctions.

No. Just trying to get to the top as cheaply as possible.

    Karl,

That's why this one is irritating me. I like the coin, and need it for my set. But, at this rate it's going to end up at stupid money long before the end of the auction.

  • I have had bidders like that, and you know what? they almost never win their auction. all they do is push the price up, then the snipers blow them out of the water last minute anyhow... good for sellers. bad for buyers.

All those bids right in a row don't prove anything. Look at some of my bidding history; it must look like I'm shilling too, especially since some other board members ended up being the high bidder after I bid for days & days on the same item.

Well, if nothing else, Hotrod1960's sudden emergence, bidding tactics and eclectic collecting interests are a bit unusual, especially for someone with a feedback rating of one.
  • There is nothing unusual about that bidding pattern, in fact it's common. "Sneaking up" on the high bid amount in minimal increments as you do not know what the high proxy bid actually is. This way you will just pass the highest bid with the least amount of $. Also some "pad" their high proxy then go to bed.....
