PCGS/NGC SURVEY II

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
From Legend
I added the poll for Legend

Can some one put this up in poll form (I can't figure out how to)?

I'd like to know:

How many people buy PCGS graded coins ONLY?

How many people BUY NGC graded coins only?

How many people buy coins graded by ALL the services?

If no poll can be put up your answers are appreciated. Me personally, I buy the coin, NOT the holder (unless a customer makes a specific demand-even then the coin must be all there).

I think option 3 should be re-worded to include RAW coins as well. I buy slabbed as well as raw coins, as long as I buy sight-seen. (I don't buy sight-unseen PCGS and NGC slabs either.)

Well, I had trouble thinking of the discriminating factor. I wanted to capture the concept that someone only buys holdered coins, but from any company. Versus the concept of buying any coin. The raw one, to me, is that concept of buying regardless of a holder but with the eye of being a raw coin collector. That is, the holder doesn't mean anything. It's splitting hairs just a tad, but an important distinction for my interpretation of what Legend wanted.

    i selected "Any Company"

but that only includes anacs and an occasional segs.

slight oversight in the 4 options? shouldn't there be 1 that says "raw or slabbed, doesn't matter?" it sounds like it divides the votes such that you either buy only slabs (3 options), or only raw coins (1 option). i almost picked the 3d option, "any slab", but decided on "raw only", since in the end, i treat all coins as unslabed anyway.

edited to add - i just saw that a couple of others had the same complaint

I echo Karl's remark from the original thread.

BTW, no offense, but it bothers me a little to see it written as "pcgs coins, ngc coins", etc. they are pcgs & ngc holders. the coins are American most of the time, foreign sometimes.

The problem is that we all, probably, buy both raw and slabbed coins. So that option is actually a summation of all the options, an all of the above type approach. It is my interpretation of the original question that it was about holders primarily. So the survey is restricted to determining the holder preference or lack of holder preference or desire not to purchase holdered coins in general terms. In this context, the survey is correct.

If we are going to do a broader popularity survey, we'd need the slab companies listed (and a raw coin option) and people listing their favorites from top to bottom and judge from there. But the survey option on this forum cannot handle that sophisticated a setup.

Clearly the poll should be expanded with more clarification and more options.
For example Laura in a related thread wanted to know about PCGS vs NGC eiher or both? Others want to know about raw vs holdered, etc
Choice three lumps all other holders which may or may not pertain to polled collectors. So I suggest a new poll be developed for those that voted in Cat 3 to see what they actually buy.

It depends on if they are for my Registry set, or something I just like. For my Registry set I buy PCGS slabbed coins. If it is just a coin I happen to like, I usually stick to PCGS, NGC, ANACS. Sometimes SEGS or older PCI holders. ANACS is good for the different varieties of 1972 DDO Lincolns and other varieties. ANACS and SEGS will grade problem coins and slab them with the problem identified.
Overall, I will say that I think that PCGS is a bit tighter than anyone else and a lot tighter on certain issues. Like Red Lincoln cents. mdwoods

I voted for "I buy coins in any company's holder" too... and what's the big deal about saying "NGC coins"? Seems "graded", as in "NGC graded coins", is implied. Since that's what they do. Are you saying some people think NGC "mints" coins, as in "NGC minted coins"? Pretty stoopid IMHOimage No offense image

in light of nwcs's opinion, i am comfortable with my choice of option #4. i really do see all coins as being raw. i'll probably be the only 1 choosing that option.

Well, Karl, at least you are consistent. And, you are more than happy to back up your stated beliefs with reasonable action.

  • I buy coins for the coin, not the holder. If I like the coin and it is in a 2x2 cardboard holder, or a "professionally" graded holder, I will buy the coin. Now, on the other hand, if I do not like the coin, I don't care what holder it is in, I will not buy it.

  • My purpose for this thread is to show that the coin world does not revolve around one grading service (although I could possibly be proven wrong). I wasn't seeking any other issues like slabbed vs raw.

What I've found, having been on these boards for half a year, is that it's the same pattern you see everywhere in business. A small core group of die-hards account for most of the business. A larger group of enthusiasts have mixed loyalties and sway with whoever has the best deal/product for the moment. And another small group of rebels fight the power regardless of the product. I think slabs are a pretty typical industry. Same reason why there are Coca-Cola only people, Pepsi only people, and those (like me) who get what's on sale that week. image
  • I buy coins in all holders but my "keepers" are all in PCGS.

I choose none of the above- I buy coins. If they are in a piece of plastic, then so be it... I buy coins

  • You do know this is a loaded question. The politically correct answer is "I buy coins in all holders" (I voted for PCGS only because of what I stated above), we don't "really " depend on the holders we count on our own abilities.

Each of the 3 first choices should include raw coins otherwise I can't make a truthful answer.

I buy PCGS and NGC MAINLY. I dont mind buying raw or other companies' slabs or raw if I'm buying them sight seen. I never buy ACG coins, even if I agree with the grade.... which is extreamly rare.

  • This mini unscientific poll proved what I thought. I'm relieved to see the majority of collectors DO buy the coin and not the holder.

    Laura,

Why don't you start a poll that asks who supports any given service due to a political agenda?

Some one unable to read between the lines would probably focus on the tongue in cheek portion of my earlier statement and believe it is referring to a political agenda. The real question this survey is asking is "Do you buy the coin or do you buy the holder ?" We all know the appropriate answer to that question. And a real chest thumper would even go a step further than saying "of couse I buy the coin and not the holder" (response #3) and say maybe something like "all coins are raw to me, I don't need no stinking slab".

I "buy" coins in all holders, but when it comes time to sell I want them to be in PCGS holders. This is an unfortunate product of percieved "holder" value, and until that changes I'll have to play along.
