Okay, what is with the PCGS pop report and cameo Mercury Dimes?!?

I mean we all know that some have been graded, but why does it show that there are none?

  • When PCGS first starts a new designation they wait a while before publishing population reports. That is because there might be tons of cameo Mercury dimes (yeah, right) but people might get misinformation after only the first one or two get slabbed. This made sense when they started adding the cameo designation on 19'th century coins.

One might argue it's even more misleading not to list any, when some coins do exist. I know David Hall is fond of using the phrase: "this coin is so fresh it isn't even listed in the most recent pop reports!."

PCGS needn't save us from ourselves. If they grade the coin, they should list in in the reports. The accuracy of the pop reports is bad enough, as it is.

(Also, assuming the decision to attribute '36-'42 CAMs was made for all denominations at the same time, one wonders why the Jeff reports list some (all?) of the CAMs, but not CAM Mercs.)image
