Should PCGS hire some ex coin doctors?

In my field, it's common for network security companies to hire hackers as their top programmers to fight against other hackers. The companies give them a place to "play" legitimately and to use every trick, but harnessed to produce products that protect networks against people like them. And they get paid well.

On that same concept, what would happen if PCGS started a conservation company and hired some expert coin doctors to do conservation, but also to do AT detection. They'd be the best in the business at that. And it would give PCGS (or another company who does this) an edge over others. The coin doctors would get to teach people about their trade so we could detect it, could do an expert job in conservation, and help prevent AT and improperly modified coins from going into slabs. And be paid well.

Any comments on this idea?

  • Why would Coin doctors help PCGS learn how to detect AT and other things. If they want to send doctored coins coins to PCGS have have them not know it was doctored?

NGC has done that and it seems to be working well. I agree that PCGS should do it also.

Nothing, but in case they haven't considered it I was proposing they do consider it.

It is an excellent idea and, if they aren't already doing it, they should. AFAIC, though, they can skip the conservation part. Just hire the best EX-doctor, and use them in the grading room. Two purposes could be served. First, of course, is to help prevent situations such as that which Laura recently encountered.

The other benefit would be educating the graders in the hopes that we'd see more consistency in the body-bag department.

but encourages two more people to start doctoring coins.

rather than give a hacker a well-paid job (and encourage 10 more hackers), why not publicly execute one (and discourage 10 would-be hackers).

Seriously though, PCGS should pursue this concept. After all, the FBI hires former hackers ..and pays them handsomely) to catch current ones, so there is something to be said for "crime does pay".

FOX TV ran a few specials of a Magician, wearing a mask, who would show you how some of the most amazing magic tricks were performed and done.
Once the magic trick was revealed I discovered how easy it is to be fooled and also how easy it is for the Magician to fool you.
PCGS Hiring Coin Doctors is a good idea.
