Should you put a rare coin in an album?

I was wondering what forum members thought about puting rare coins in coin albums. For example, I have a collection of morgan dollars in a Dansco morgan dollar album, if I had a raw 1893 S should I put it an album. What do you think?
Found a circulated 1903 0 Morgan to complete my Morgan dollar collection!!

Sure. As long as the album is safe for coins, should be fine. The only thing to watch out for is slide marks from the plastic sleeves on the album, if you use that type.
Personally, I like the look of my sets in the albums.

I had no problems breaking my 93-S out of the holder to place in my Dansco. If it was MS, I wouldn't, but for a circulated example you shouldn't hurt it any.

I'm only putting circulated coins in albums because I don't want to mar MS coins with slide marks.

i use wayte-raymond boards for my complete sets, since i won't have a need for subsequently sliding off the plastic windows. if your very careful, you can avoid slide marks.

    Circulated -YES, MS - NO.

Too many opportunities to damage the MS coin.

    Joe.
  • I've got some MS Morgans in a Dansco, but they're not the "big ticket" ones. I also have a short set of MS Walkers in a Dansco. I'm real careful moving the slides around, but even then it's real hard to avoid slide damage, particularly for the bigger coins like dollars.

The album layout is nice, but you gotta be careful...and realize they're probably gonna tone over time, so if that bothers you ( I like nice toning) I wouldn't do it.
  • Thanks for the input. Paigowjohnny makes a good point, toning may occur in a dansco album over time. I like toning around the edges of a Morgan

Throw the windows away and let the coins and pages breathe. Do they really serve a purpose.

Edited to add: PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: If you really must drink, please don't try to insert coins. Have a "designated collector" hold onto your albums.image

  • You pretty much need the slides on a Dansco dollar album. The dollars don't always fit real snugly in the holes...particularly if you've swapped a couple coins out over time and "stretched" the holes a little...probably another good reason for not putting "top shelf" MS coins in a Dansco...but they sure do look nice...especially with the background of the brown pages...

    BNE,
I wouldn't take out my windows either but thought I'd get some TGI's with that statement.

  • Any common circ coin-yes, any MS & rare (even if circ) - absolutely not. Hairlines on an MS coin can be costly.
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
  • I have an old proof set that would have been gem if it didn't have slide marks on each coin. It was a terrible thing to damage those coins. I also have a dime with a staple scratch on each side. Maybe people don't care if they damage circulated coins a little but I certainly wouldn't put anything of value anywhere that I could damage the coin.

A coin like that, even in low grade, I would certify and put in an Eagle album. Personally, I would set the cutoff for putting a coin in an album at around $50.
  • Doesnt matter if its circulated or not, slide marks destroy the coin!

  • I would argue that unless a coin is AU or higher, slide marks really don't make much difference. Even if you spent every waking hour sliding the window back and forth, it would take decades to make an XF coin wear down to a VF. Personally, I keep all my sets of Lincolns, Morgans, Jeffersons, Roosevelts, 2-cent and 3-cent nickels in Dansco albums. I even keep my Kennedys, Washingtons, Buffalos and Peace dollars in whitman folders! image And since those are all complete sets, they include some pretty key dates!
  • When the day comes to sell, some might want maximum dollar, PCGS will recommend a funeral! If your going to put in albums, be real careful! Push the coins down, away from the surface, so they dont touch the sliding window!
