The 1971-72 coins were not available in mint sets, and were released for general circ. only. They are usually pretty ugly. This coin has unusual luster, and makes for a fun "guess the grade coin". Any guesses?

I am glad that we both thought it was a 65, I thought about a 66 at first, but used the same strict
criteria that you do.
Brian.
Must have been upgraded for the outstanding luster?

And actually the 71-D is actually one of the easier clads in high-grade -- though allowances are made for the 71-D and 72-D being low-relief with a correspondingly "weak" appearing strike.
It's the 1971-P and 72-P that are the real dogs, and they are definitely graded to a different standard. Well, they usually are anyway.
I saw a few 71D PCGS MS66 with mind-blower luster. This particular one has good luster but not a mind-blower one.
Your 73D should have a shot to MS66, IMHO.
