Best and worst Morgan?

A few days ago, someone on the board was looking for some worn coins for his grandson, and I have been going through some of my stuff, trying to pick one of everything to send him. I still do not know anything on values and grading, and do not want to send something worth too much, and I don't know one from another, but could you guys tell me which is the best and the worst, and how much the worst one is worth, approx? I numbered them for reference. Thanks for any help, Patty

#1 is the worst folllowed by #2 which both are less than $10 and #3 is a little better worth $20 or so.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Well the 1921`s are fairly common and somewhat popular because mainly it`s also the first year of the Peace dollars ( Just my personal opinion on that).

#1 looks like it`s about a Very Good or Fine condition, and if I`m right about that, it`s worth about $9-$11 retail.

#2 Looks to be Very Fine and worth about $15 retail.

#3 I can`t make out the date and looks to be about a Fine or Very Fine.

So I hope it was of some help. I`m sure there`s others here that would help.
  • Thanks!

#1 is the worst worth about $10. #3 is the best worth about $20.
  • Well, I guessed a hundred percent wrong. I thought 1 was best, 2 was second, and 3 was worst! Thanks all for so much help. I REALLY REALLY like this board!!!

    Approximate grades -
    #1 VF20 (very fine)
    #2 XF40 (extra fine)
#3 AU55+ (almost uncirculated) could even be MS (mint state) but can;t see the front well enough - cool
    toning though

    dates/mintmarks I think #1) 1921 #2)1921 #3) 1896 (looks like 1898 to me)

don't see any mintmarks on the back below the eagle feathers -

Do you have any coin books? Redbook? Do you get any magazines? Coins/Coinworld?
Do you have any books on grading? Photoguide? ANA standard grading guide?

There are 3 price guides online I frequently use - PCGS priceguide/Numismedia fmv/Heritage Value Index
  • there is an "S" under #1, nothing under the other two.
  • I graded a little looser than the others - but still doesn't make too much different with these.

I am not sure where you live and how much you do/do not know so ->

The S (above the DO and below the wreath on the reverse) is the mintmark signifying where it was manufactured - S stands for San Francisco, CA - the other 2 have nothing which signifies they where produced at Philadelphia, PA

    1921-S 21,695,000
    1921 44,690,000
    1896 9,976,762

These are the US mint published values for dollars produced - usually (but not always) - lower produced means more valuable.

The condition also is such that better condition (without defects or spectacular toning) from a certain date/mint location means more valuable.

On your three coins compare the obverse (front - has the date) look at the hair details - more curls, better hairdo, better condition

On the back (reverse) compare the feathers on the wings - and also on the eagles breast -> more feathers, better condition

I'm not sure what you do/do not know, stick around these threads for a few more months before buying or selling much, it will make you less likely to be taken advantage of.
  • I love the toning on #3!image
