Off Topic: Wat about these metal detectors guys

Just returned home from my daily walk on the boardwalk where , once again, I saw a couple of guys on the beach with all kinds of expensive paraphinalia, scanning for whatever. Do these guys ever find any thing besides bottle caps? Twowood

  • Haven't you ever seen that TV ad where the fat guy brags about how his wife comments on the weight he lost...pulls an old Walker out of the ground....as well as some big ol' ring that his wife will just LOVE ???!!!

Made me want to go out and get one...I need to lose a few pounds and quit spending so much money on coins...
  • We have bought some very nice coins found by metal detectors. I've paid $20k for a rare CC dime that came out of the ground. So yeah, most of them are pop-top finders, but a few get luckyimage
  • Hop over to the metal detector board....some people are finding nice coins, but it takes a lot of effort, and you'll find a dozen pull tabs for every memorial cent.
  • Yes you do find things. I metal detected for several years with just
a cheap Heathkit you build yourself. I have gold rings, rolls of silver
dimes and coins I found, sterling silver, civil war relics, antique
metal objects, you name it I found it all right. And yes plenty of
bottle caps and metal tabs from cans. I still have it all in my
display cases. I even wrote an article for a magazine and
pictured a nice find. But no $20K coin, that's for sure.
In fact I am getting back into it soon. It is thrilling every time
that detector sounds off, that's for sure. Best thing to do is do your
homework and try to figure out where picnics or other functions were
held years ago and may be overgrown now. To illustrate, in one of the
magazine articles a fellow found a postcard of a fireman sponsored
picnic near where he lived. He found where the place was through the
photo and it was wooded. The picnics were held there from the late 1800's
until about 1920's. He went there and found about 500 coins and pictured
them all. That's what can happen.
