Is anybody else here like me?????

I spend countless hours digging through "trash Silver" bins hoping to fill up my albums. I plug all the holes I can realizing that I will never find the keys. Maybe metal detecting. I have never found a diamond in the rough. I only have the money to buy 1 or 2 quality Indian heads per year. But you know what? I have fun and that's what it's all about.

thanks to those that have shared all their time and info, so I may learn more about coins.

Yep, I do something similar. I've been building a circulated set of cents from 1909 to 1974. So far I'm about 75% finished. I've also started a silver circulated roosevelt set. Very easy to do. I think I may get another folder and do a mercury set afterwards or a jefferson nickel set. I have many nickels from 1938 on and many mercs from 1916 on. I enjoy doing the sets as cheap fun between the bigger purchases.

IndianHeadMan, I couldn't agree with you more.

I have more fun going through and picking out "low-rent" coins than buying expensive coins.

In fact, at the last Orlando show about a month ago I purchased (103) hand selected Washingtons, Mercuries and Buffaloes for a total expenditure of about $300.image

I'm working with my daughter on plugging spaces in her Whitman albums for wheat cents in the same way. She grabs a handful of them from the "12 for a dollar" bowl and we slowly build the set.

I remember years ago digging through a ten-cent dark side box at a flea market and finding a Nova Eboracs in VF...not bad for a dime image

You just never know what you'll find if you just dig a little bit.

    Cheers,

  • Yes i do this all the time after only one year of doing this i have a complete set of mercs (less the 16-d) i found a 21 in VG and a 21-D in VF+. not a bad collection considering i only have about 45-50 bucks into the whole set.

You know, these circulated sets will never really have long term value growth, but they sure are satisfying. And when you consider that most of your expensive coins will eventually end up in a safe deposit box, these inexpensive coins are ones you can enjoy. And, who knows, you might find a variety after a while that really pays off!

I have always believed the vast majority of the time that the search is more fun than the actual find.

They're especially rewarding when you can work on them with family or friends. As the local coin store owner told me, "In the end, only people really matter, anyway."
