Lot of fake gold dollars around. A lot of them dated 1853 were sold locally as good coins around 20 years ago. A lot of the guys in our coin club got burned on them. Some of the guys even quit collecting because of it. That's what's so bad about counterfeits. Someone loses a lot of money and gives up on the hobby. I don't care for slabs, but they have sure helped the hobby with the authentication guarantee.
Here is another fake gold, a $2 1/2. This one looks great! I wonder what happened to the fake dies? I wonder how many of these are in collector hands in Europe, Asia, etc?
