I thought this was a great find for $0.20. What do y'all think? Pic taken through a saflip with a halogen light source. I know this is only the obverse, but what do you think he grades based on what you see?

It looks nice. Of course, I can't grade it FROM A PICTURE, of ONLY ONE SIDE, taken THROUGH A FLIP image Get it graded! If you're not in a collectors club you can send it in via an 'authorized dealer' or just send it to ANACS.

I know, but we all like to take guesses. The reverse, as I've seen, is rarely that much of an influencer on copper grades. The rev, though, is consistent with all the MS-65 and MS-66 slabs I have from PCGS on copper.

Looks to me like truthfully an MS64.

That would be PCGS 65, NGC 66, ANACS 65, ICG 68, and ACG 70.

The fields are quite nice, but I think MS-64, too, because of the nicks on Abe's shoulder. And one or two on the secondary focal area. But I could see it getting 65 in some places. While it is a good representation, the coin is more appealing in natural light than under a halogen.

I have quite a number of roll-end toned coins that look somethingt like that one from that era. Seems the red paper wrappers used at the time did some real dandy's on the coins. I have a few that would probably grade MS65 thereabouts, but I never once considered them candidates for slabs. I just didn't figure they were valuable enough for that. I have some of them in nice 2x2s though! LOL!

I figure, what? Maybe $15-$20 value for a nicely toned bullseye MS65-66 coin dating 1960, 1960D, 1961, 1961D, 1962, 1962D, etc.? And the slabbing fee is more than that.

  • I've graded hundreds of similar cents with PCGS. If the rev is as nice, it has a good chance at MS66...especially since it has good eye-appeal. As an MS65 it's only worth about $12-15, but an MS66 could go $200-300. I would say it's worth a shot.
