Good question. ANACS is not shy: They're pretty good about stating "Artifically Toned" on the insert. A coin that has "re-toned" is not necessarily AT. But, even with that argument, the one in the auction sure looks AT though, doesn't it?
It's actually a stunning coin me thinks. If not AT how could the center be so polished and bright and the perimeter colored. If it was natural you would expect at least a little yellowing or hazing in the center. AT or not it sure is perty.
Well, looking at this I'm torn. The obverse looks fine but the reverse looks AT. I bet this was slabbed back in the mid 90s when many 2nd gen AT coins made it into holders before the graders caught on. I may be a liar, but I seem to recall seeing this peace dollar on the AT video. But I may be thinking of another peace dollar with similar toning. The fact that the colors have no meshing and crawl over the devices is worrisome. I bet it's AT reverse. Now that I look at the larger pic of the obv, I think it's AT as well. On further review, definitely AT on both sides.
Being the toned peace nut that I am, I almost bought this one, but I couldn't get over the AT thing. If that ever gets into a PCGS or NGC holder there will be a huge premium on that coin. Peace dollars just don't have that kind of natural toning, but again I'm new to this and could be wrong, it sure is pretty though.
Yeah I was looking at that too. I thought it was pretty too. Thought I might throw a cheap bid in at the end but geeze you can get one without any cleaning or questionable tone for that price.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
