Stupid question but I'm actually serious :)

I was reading the very entertaining Anaconda vs. state of (Fill in your state) thread. In particular his comment of the F10 1797 Dollar priced the same as an MS68 Kennedy.

For some reason I thought, "Does anyone collect circulated Moderns?" And I don't mean 90% silver as a silver hedge. I mean like VF 2000 Quarters.

Is there anyone out there collecting those?

I'm working on a set of 2002 silver proof SQs right now. Been in my pocket since July, but they're barely down to AU50. I think I'm going to need to buy a rock tumbler.image

Well, it takes longer for clad coinage to wear than silver. This is because nickel is MUCH harder than silver.
  • Hey, I didn't even think of circulated proofs image

That is interesting. Although I just can't bear to blemish a nice shiny DCAM.

    PCGS submission 3039574 has a AG03 1994 Kennedy (FA02, if I'm lucky) and a VG10 1984 Kennedy. Both these were formally HOOT'S coins.

-Congratulations, by the way, on your success with 100% completion of your PCGS Modern Registry. Looking good.

I ordered two 2002 silver sets from the mint. The State Quarters in both sets sucked so bad that I spent one set at the grocery store, and made the other pocket pieces. I'm hoping to one day create a pop 1 set.image

Yes, lots (probably millions) of people collect State Quarters from circulation.

There are hundreds of thousands of sets of modern coins being assembled from circulation
in addition to the state quarter sets. Some may argue that these are not serious collectors
since there are few moderns with a wholesale price above face value. These are for the main
part newbies. Many of them are young. In 25 years most collectors will have gotten their
start this way. This doesn't have to happen, but when we old timers are gone there will be
a new generation of collectors or the hobby will have dwindled to just a few. So I would claim
they are real collectors collecting real coins. ...and maybe someday they'll buy our collections.

I get all of my moderns for my albums out of circulation. Not sure if this applies as now that I have all of them up to date, the coins I get are in nice shape when I get them.
