What Do You Think Of The Third Party Grading Survey

I'm sure everyone has seen the results of the poll of professional numismatists. PCGS and NGC were ranked at the top. They were followed by ANACS and IGC. Then PCI and SEGS, and finally ACC. There was an editorial in a recent Coin World questioning the fairness of the survey. It proposed that professional dealers are biased, and based their views on perception rather than experience.

What does everyone think about the survey.

Also for the fun of it let's rank our opinions. Let's keep PCGS off the list as we are probably biased and rank the rest. My rankings ex-PCGS would be:

ANACS
NGC
SEGS
ICG
PCI
ACC

What do you think.

The only area I found to be totally bogus was the "turn-around time". PCI ranked average when actually they offer one day, three day and five day service. The five day is the longest they offer and PCI is strict on getting the coins back to you by that fifth day.
Their grading is for crap, but this survey didn't accurately reflect this one area of service. When a survey can be off like this it taints the rest of it.

It seems to me that the survey accurately reflected the general sentiments of this board. There is the first tier of PCGS and NGC, and ANACS has a niche for varieties and net graded coins.

The levels below that seemed reasonable. You might switch one or two around and of course ACG is just pick a grade plastic and unacceptable.

Just MHO from observing this board for a good while now.

I disagree with the survive result a lot. My experience shows some different results. image

I never use PCI service so that I can't comment on their turn around time. I used to submit many coins to ANACS and I feel that they are in the same class as PCGS and NGC. In a certain area, I think they are even better. For example, in the show, I could face to face to discuss the coins and their grades with graders. This is so called customer service.

To me, the issue to ANACS is that many nice coins used to be inside ANACS holders are crossed-over so that when you go to coin shows you won't see too many exciting coins in ANACS holders. image

i think the survey was accurate that is why it ruffled so many feathers

for me if we keep pcgs off the list then ngc is top

i think bgc and pcgs are on top but as always but the coin not the holder

within my respective series that i specialize in if a coin walks and talks and sings to me and it is correctly graded and is in a pcgs/ngc holder then just a bonus for me the holder as a fact of life many coins are maximised in these holders and are for the most part only saleable in these holders the way the current market is and that is okie with me

it is an imperfect world but that is okie the holder is a comfort and is really okie as long as the coin walks and talks and sings to me as again if properly graded then just a bonus and an added measure of protection

now if the coin is undergraded then all the better for me plus plus plus!!

as strange as it sounds there are currently millions of dollars of good coins in dealers hands that cant be sold because they are undergraded and even though you might have a 66 in a 65 holder the dealers cant get top 66 money for it i kind of disagree with this but it is certainly reality based and understandable!
