ABOUT THE CENTERING

To me the issue I started a few nights ago about cards that I thought were clearly O/C and from large submitters getting PSA 8 grades was my biggest concern. As far as corners, edges , rough cuts and small marks and print dots , these characteristics are subject to human judgement and I think hard to a certain degree to maintain a fair share of consistency. That's why a collector should "buy the card..not the holder". Some qualifiers bother certain collectors more then others. I just have a very hard time gettting a OC grade when another card from the same issue does not when it is centerd the same or worse, or I ask for NQ on my cards to be graded and I receive a lower grade. I am most familiar with are the 69/70 and 70/71 tallboy basketball,I feel I have handled as many of those as anyone , graded as well as not graded.I do not know how to send links , but if you have time, check out Ebay auction #1580183205 , and see the centering on this card. Is this card not clearly OC, itn't it a mathematical guideline, one that is not a judgement call. I can emal a scan to anyone showing a same issue card with better centering and a OC grade(and I believed my grade was correct, close , but correct). This is my major issues, I have read the threads , and I understand where people are concerned what is in a PSA 9 or 10 holder, I am not caught up with that, where there is judgement there is error, we are all human. I just thought centering was more of a black and white issue, it is either 65/35 , or 70/30 (whatever they are using now) or it's not, cut and dry!! If you look at that auction , please explain how more then one grader sees this card as centered, and if it is , I would like my OC grades reversed and I will sell someone the holder.

as you can see, i was bidding on that 69/70 topps nelson card. i totally agree with you that it should be an oc. i guess my only question is..is the card nice enough to go psa 9oc and they just dropped it to an 8nq?? i've been outbid and wouldn't go any higher because of the centering. i also agree that it should be a mathematical issue and not an issue of judgement on the grader's behalf. if you follow the tall boys, then you probably remember the psa 10(one of the first and i can't remember who it was) that looked great on the front but had 80/20 centering(at best) on the reverse. i understand that it is in the "guidelines", but still can't agree that it is a true "gem mint" card. if this is the case, can a card that is mc or pd be considered a 10 gem mint? just my thought from a fellow "tall boy" collector! tim

  • Just a thought. One large submitter/dealer lists a large number of 1961 Topps Baseball. These have been bringing strong prices for a while especially on commons not often listed. A couple of days ago a high number PSA 8 that I needed was listed at 60% SMR, but received no bids because the centering was terrible.

So there are cards that slip through the cracks. No one forces a buyer to plunk down the cash. If they do, caveat emptor.

If I'm buying it's PRICELESS. If I'm selling, it's WORTHLESS.

  • Dom,
That is true , no one needs to spend their money, I just can't understand why centering is not cut and dry, I would think any card that looks to be on the fence is measured so one knows exactly the centering.
On another note , Dom, I see your putting together a awesome 84 Donruss set. I think those are some of the nicest cards, fell in love with them over a decade ago and purchased about 40,000 commons over the years(not the smartest of moves!!!). If you sending in cards to be graded , and want me to look for a 9 quality Moreno for your set I will , most of the cards are solid NMT/MT or better, I would be shocked if I cold not find a nice Moreno unless they are typically miscut? As far as a 10 , I think those are just luck of the draw and would not know the difference between a 9 or 10 of a sharp looking card.

This is the card in question, and it does appear that PSA missed this one.

Nobody's perfect, and remember, only the mis-grades ever get talked about.
The other 99 + % correct grades are never mentioned.

    Nuyauwka,

Not only should Donnie be OC, but I'm having a tough time looking at those corners and believing PSA 8! I've got 7's from many different years that would beat this card with a stick!
