Same coin auctioned twice simultaneously

Since I am interested in 1911-D US gold I bookmarked the eBay category. Item #800768564 is a $2-1/2 gold Indian certified by NTC as MS-61 strong "D" with a cert. # of 41754. It's at $300+ and is over in 8 hours. The seller sliddgard has zero feedback, just registered last Sunday, and says he's in Spain (in the USA!) but eBay thinks he lives in Canada. The other coin is eBay #801284353 sold by cuttlere (also with zero feedback). Auction is over in 2 days. They registered yesterday with "M" as location in USA, though eBay says they're in Canada. The second auction is for the exact same $2-1/2 Indian piece with strong "D" NTC MS-61 cert. # 41754. I doubt if either of the coins is available and think the picture was ripped from somewhere. Somebody save godngold(80) the $300+ they bid. I know I can't interfere. And also I don't know how to post eBay links here.

    OaklandBill,

I suspect this is the same guy, with a different user name, who had a different coin up on Ebay 2 or 3 weeks ago. A few of us sent him emails (and I contacted every bidder on his coin). The high bidder, whom I had been in touch with, was smart enough to request an escrow acount be used and the seller of course, declined.
  • Both auctions also have the exact same description under the pictures.

Both are the same coin - also the picture was snagged from a Yahoo auction - little box on the bottom gives it away. Ebay sure does not have a problem in what seems to be allowing bogus sellers sell stuff. I wonder what they would do if bogus buyers started buying stuff for high dollars.

If 2 bogus accounts were started and bought crap like this for say $20000 - ebay would eventually come after the seller for their commission - and maybe that would open their eyes to selling fraud occuring on their platform - especially if it was for the same item.

sinin1 - even the ID#s are the same. I emailed all the bidders of the one that was bid up to over $500 already.

Yep, it's the same slimeball that Mark pointed out. Note "espana" as the location. It's also precisely the same auction layout. As usual, eBay has gone all-out to stop this guy.

  • I do wish that these sellers would include a photograph of the bridge that comes with these 'below grey sheet bid' key date choice coins.
  • Why, after 7 days, doesn't ebay do something about this? It's very obvious a hoax, and apparently, a few others have had interactions with this guy?? These 2 bidders are about to get screwed. Is it against some ebay policy for someone outside of the auction to contact the bidder and explain anything to them?

  • CoinGuy1- Nice work regarding the escrow service! You suggestion to the high bidder of that auction 2 weeks ago undoubtedly saved him some real money.
  • Well would you look at the high bidder....Guess someone knows whats going on. LOL Interesting image

DCAM - thanks but I can't take credit for that. I merely contacted the bidders. The high bidder was justifiably suspicious and came up with the escrow idea on his own.

Cypher - unfortunately, Ebay doesn't have the time (and probably not the concern) to police their sales properly. They have pulled some sales during the past month or so after some of us have notified them of problems.

cypher - I just looked at the high bidder in each of the two scam salesimage Gotta love it!

I wonder if it's a board member? Someone I contacted, who was already bidding, not knowing it was a scam and who now wants revenge? Congrats to the mystery bidder, wherever you are!
  • Hmm...how interesting...the "mystery bidder" just had both his bid's cancelled...by "both" sellers...coincidence? Hmmm.... image
  • Hm...but it seems the "mystery bidder" isn't blocked, just had his bids cancelled...hopefully he'll snipe it at the end...hmmm
  • The reasons for the bid cancellations are priceless:

    First POTD 9/19/05!!

  • I missed it! What was the ID of the mystery bidder? image
  • the ID was:

    this_auction_is_a_hoax

    *evil grin*

  • It has been awhile since I laughed so hardimage

I hope "this_auction_is_a_hoax" never bids on my stuff. - I'm surprised those 2 auctions got pulled so fast!
