PCGS Label Question for Conder

OuthaulOuthaul Posts: 7,440 ✭✭✭✭✭
If it's not too much trouble, what do you know about this PCGS label? Just bought this one off-line as the auction closed w/o bidders.

Also, did you see the last NGC 1923 Peace $ sample slab went for almost $50.00? How rare are they?

Cheers,

Bob

It looks like the same kind I asked about a few days ago here.

    Conder101
Third generation PCGS slab, used basicly in December of 1989 only. The pictured slab is NOT a sample slab, but a sample slab was ade using this design. (Dog97 has one) I'm not sure what show they would have been distributed at though since the slab changed again in Jan of 1990 and they probably would have used the new slab at the FUN show.

Why Placid! I didn't know you, too, are a slab-man! I'll have to file that one away for future reference. Thanks for the info, by the way. So, are theses rare? Do they carry a premium? This is the first one I've seen, second one being the Morgan in your link.

    Cheers,

    Bob

It was used for one month in 1989 so I guess it might be pretty scarce.
I never noticed one like it before either.

    Behold the PCGS 3S1.
    Don't see many of these.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • Placid,

Thanks for helping out with answering outhauls question.

And Outhaul, the NGC sample with the Peace dollar in it is scarce but I don't think it is worth that much yet. So far I 've seen three or four of them plus about 5 morgans from the same "submission" batch. Usually a silver dollar sample slab goes for somewhere in the $24 to $30 range but morgans seem to show up more than Peace dollars so the peace dollars are probably closer to the $30 range. I think the Peace dollar sample you referenced is the highest I have seen a sample slab sell for (Although I have bid higher than that on several sample slabs. There are some I would bid much higher on.)

As to how scarce the PCGS 3 slab isI would guess that there are maybe 1.200 or so still in existance. Normaly they show up about a third as often as the PCGS 2 slab. At the Indiana State show that had about 100 dealers I saw six PCGS 2 slabs and zero PCGS 3 slabs. At the Central States fall show I saw eight PCGS 2 slabs and two PCGS 3 slabs. So think about the number of slabs you see at a couple of medium to large shows in the stock of maybe 140 different dealers and in that mass of slabs I found two.
