My First Submission Results

I had posted a few weeks back about a 1963 proof set I received with a neat pink toned half. Well I sent it in because it looked to be a good looking coin and I liked the toning. My results are PR67 from pcgs. Any thoughts on this? Was it graded less possibly because of the toning?

Thanks in advance.

Lori

PS I attached the photo of the toning. It is very pink.

  • I really had no idea on a grade. It was my first submission. To me the coin looked nice. I mainly liked the toning, that is why I submitted it. I just was wondering about toning and grading. Thanks.

At least pcgs didn't send it back as AT.
  • Not sure about the grade Lori but that coins a real eye-catcher...I like it.

  • Lori,

This is actually very good for a first submission. There aren't lots of DCAMs and 69s for those.

  • I figured with it being in the proof set it couldnt get too bad of a grade. I am adding the front of the coin photo as well. Like I said I submitted it just because I liked the toning. I was just not sure if you loose grades because of toning.

  • That kind of toning shouldn't hurt the grade at all. I have a dime with thick rim toning (see attachment) which NGC grades 68 Ultra Cam but PCGS won't grade that high. I asked about it in the Q&A forum and was told thick toning can keep a coin from very high grades like 68 and 69.

As far as I can see on your coin it looks like a nice, no problem 67. To go higher the fields would need to be deeper and clearer. At least that is my impression from the scan. Also I can't tell if there are hairlines.

There are tons of coins in proof and mint sets that won't grade very high. They get banged up sometimes and other damage is very easy to come by. Many, if not most, sets have already been looked at for super gems.

To sum it up it looks like you got a fair grade for a nice coin. Good job on your first submission.
