Post your annoying collector stories!!!

Just to give equal time.image

ONE of mine is when a collector buys a coin off me and kinda expects an implied lifetime guarantee as to the grade I or the slabbing company assigned to it.
BUT, when I sell a coin and the collector gets it slabbed at a higher grade or sells it at a higher grade(Big Buck$), he/she never comes back to give me my share of the booty.imageimage After all, it`s the right thing to do.image
A dealer once asked me if I noticed any three-legged buffalos on the bourse,to which I replied,"...no,but I saw alot of two-legged jackasses..."

some collectors want the dealer to pay them to take the coin and then they still wouldn't be happy

Here's my best one. I put up for sale a really nice proof 66 1938 merc on ebay. So nice I am thinking that I should send it back to PCGS for a possible upgrade. It's in an old PCGS holder to boot, but I am thinking that maybe I am overgrading the coin because I like it so much. It sells for a nice price, and the buyer emails me afterwards wanting to know what my return policy is. I have none stated in my auction, this is a really nice coin so I not worried about it being returned. So I tell him send it back if you aren't satisfied. So two weeks later it shows up at the post office with a note, please refund my money, coin is overgraded. I send him a check. A couple of months later I take it to a show, a dealer that buys mercs, offered to immediately buy if from me for what I had sold it on ebay for. I smiled at him as he counted out the cash and said you dog you think it will upgrade. Long story short, a couple of months later I saw the coin in his case, yep PCGS proof 67. I got the cert number emailed it to the buyer who had returned it to me, said tough luck on your part I decided to resubmit coin, here is the cert number, go look it up.

    Mike, nice story!

About 1979 I had to sell (almost) my entire collection. I was insulted by my local dealer whom, wanted only to pick out the rare, key and semi-key coins. I would not break-up the sets. I had every cent from 1857 to date, every dime from 1916 to date, a complete set of 2¢ pieces, complete set of walkers, Franklins, Kennedys, etc, etc. I simply would not budge on breaking the sets. I found another dealer about 30 miles away in a larger city, and was offered a fair price on everything. I was even give extra because the sets were complete and the dealer said the sets sell very quickly. One of the favorites I sold was a RED 1909-S Unc Indian. I sure was glad I didn't break those sets.

You do what you have to do, but there is no reason to be taken because you need the funds!

  • My local dealer will do free layaway for an unlimited amount of time, just as long as you come in semi-regularly and make some kind of payment. He says he can't stand the one or two customers who put $1000-$2000 worth of coins on layaway, and pays like $60 once a year. I'm sure he was exaggerating slightly, but it must be frusterating having those type of customers who pay very little just one or twice a year, when the dealer could be moving the coin much faster.
  • C`mon dealers, fess up!image

ANOTHER one of mine is when a collector at the local show SMUGLY says: "It`ll be here at the next show." 9 out of 10 times it isn`t.image

My coins are there to sell, PTVETTER runs the museum section of the show.imageimageimageimageimageimageimage
