Important poll

With the recent changes in personnel at PCGS and NGC allow NGC to market and/or technically change their brand to surpass PCGS as the perceived #1 grading service?

Yes, I learned from my last poll that the answers need to cover all the bases or somebody will whine; so I have a pro-PCGS answer, an anti-PCGS answer, one for people who can't decide, another for people who can't decide and one for Karl... er, I mean people who collect raw coinage only.

Although I am pretty confident I missed something somewhere. image

  • all coins are raw,and issued that way! if someone decides to further protect them in plastic, and if said plastic somehow increases the value to them or said market, that is a choice made in the eyes of the beHOLDER ,,,,,get it beHOLDER.
i personally like both but if it is a key date coin, then yes i would want some sort of holder to say"YES"this is a real issue coin,no cleaning, damage, copy, fake, altered ect ect.
there is a place in my collection for plastic,as limited as it may be.i do ride the fence on the issue, raw verses slabbed.
but for me the thrill of the hunt,to find a mint state (rare)in quality or date, mint mark,in raw condition..and use my talent to guess the grade before sending it in to any 3rd party grading company
is the biggest and most favorite part of collecting, taking the chance on a raw coin and then it finds its home, with a little skill, and alot of research.......it is rewarding enough for me to continue the hobby each day.

I said no because I don't think they can surpass NGC but probably be a Mexican standoff like the commercials on TV saying "I would rather push a Ford than drive a Chevy" and "Chevy #1, Heartbeat of America" etc.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • i think YES and without a doubt for several reasons,1) ngc as you will see in the next few months,is going to become VERY aggresive in the market for reasons that make sence..
people in general need change because they dont feel (a)they are recieving the customer service they deserve for their hard earned money, more so in this economy than anytime before.and we all know the importance of customer service.
    (b) ngc is previa to the whole pcgs structure, now more than ever..well take a guess RICK is there for a reason,he is very very customer service oriented.
and this will be NGC biggest attribute, people can handle why there coins did not grade the way they thought they would(in reality they knew before sending)in most cases.
but people will NOT tolerate poor customer service, not in this economy, money is tight, the hobby as far as collectors and dealers see it unfolding every day.
do you see my reasoning? do you agree? is it what you believe?

    prooflike, here's what you missed!

call me crazy, but i think ngc is already #1 - at least in terms of sheer numbers.

huh? what??? such a statement from someone who doesn't even use either svc?

i'm basing this observation on the sheer # of slabs i see from show to show. i have no statistical information to back this up, but it does seem that i see more of the whitey's than the blue 1's.

of course, this could just mean that collectors everywhere have dumped their ngc slabs, & all the pcgs slabs stay at home, meaning the opposite would be true of whose #1. or maybe pcgs slabs just get cracked out more often...

anyway, like i said, call me crazy

Since they get all of CrapAtHome's business, I'd guess you're right.

It's not the fault of NGC that the Shop@Home people use their service. They also use ICG. You can't blame the service for this. They just grade coins that are submitted. Besides, I would guess that S@H doesn't even submit them to NGC. They just contract with a large dealer.

I'll say that NGC is already #1 and the only people who have yet to realize this are the blind PCGS supporters, the modern colectors, and those that have to convice themselves that just because they paid a premium for the PCGS slab that they are the better company.
  • gregs right s@h would use ACG if they could find a dealer they could rely on .

Please expand on your statement, "perceived number one grading service". Perceived number one by whom?

    "perceived number one grading service"

    per PNG survey.

I've read and reread the PNG survey, I don't see where it says PCGS is perceived to be number one, maybe you can cut and paste it for us?

    Hey,
I'm not a blind PCGS supporter, but I hardly think of NGC as number 1 for the coins I collect. I'll buy the right coin in any slab and even raw (in person) or as long as there is a return privilege. I trust my eye, and will let the chips fall when I'm wrong. NGC is still off MY mark on Morgan dollars and Franklin halves.

Gilbert, I don't buy anyones slabs, but pardon me for saying this to you I have been collecting Morgans and Franklins since the 60's and I have seen dogs for the grades in everyone's slabs. I couldn't tell you 90% of the time what slab a coin was in that I looked at in person. My eyes start and end at the coin. If you or anyone else wants to buy sight unseen, more power to you. I am assuming you wouldn't pass up a nice coin for the grade because of what slab it was in or would you?

If you collect only modern coins, PCGS is your company. If you collect and deal in older material as I do it's a toss up. Both have issued great, properly graded coins in slabs, and both have issued ugly overgraded coins in slabs. I would no more buy coins blind than I would drive a car blindfolded. Neither service is consistent, but if you twist my arm I would say that NGC is more consistent.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I voted no. The reason is related to other items in the past. Cassette v. 8-Track, vhs v. betta. Consumers are funny. Once people think something is better it is almost impossible to change their minds. From a quality and customer service aspect, even if NGC is better than PCGS, it will be difficult to "move up one spot."
